I went to Help Island, which is the island in the centre of the Orientation Islands. It is only accessible to volunteers like mentors and greeters, and new people who haven't been to the mainland yet. Help Island didn't exist when I was a new avatar, you went straight from Orientation Island to the mainland.
It is sooo nearly right ... and yet so wrong. The confusing thing for new people when I joined was that once you had worked through the Orientation Island, you were dropped at the welcome areas, when you arrived, and were completely disorientated and there were lots of people ready to assail you with information.
Nowadays, people can choose to travel to Help Island, if they can find it, but they wonder around just as dazed and confused. The central pod shown in the picture has radiating walkways that point to the freebie shop or the sandbox, where there are usually mentors available to help. Even so, whenever I go there, I am pounced on by new people asking about what they should do, or how to do the simplest things. Now, if they put ME in charge ....
They have fixed the Freebie shop, which used to drop a white wolf skin on an unsuspecting new avatar, so that it now goes quietly into a folder in your inventory. They have tried hard to make the things scattered around the island simple for people ... but it's still VERY confusing. People arrive at the Welcome Areas still very unsure about a lot of things which ought to be covered.
I'd like to see a place like the Shelter put in charge of a new person's area, which is made accessible only to avatars under a month old and volunteers.
