In a move proving that there is no "FIC," Linden Lab has just issued a three day forum suspension to Cristiano Midnight for reporting the object return bug. This action is consistent with the experience of famed Dominus creator, Francis Chung who indicated here on Second Life Insider that Linden Lab reacted to the script-stealing bug by suspending those who went public on LL's servers.
The basis of the account action was the following: "Exploit Disclosure: Residents may not take any actions or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content that contains any instructions, data, scripts, or other computer programming routines that are intended to damage, detrimentally interfere with, surreptitiously intercept or expropriate any system, data, content or personal information. Posting information about a serious exploit on the forums."
The question of going public with a bug that could be potentially damaging to the community is a polarizing one. As is the case of Francis' script-theft bug, Linden Lab may not always respond quickly enough to prevent disaster without pressure from the general public. On the other hand, "Smooth Sailing" has never made a headline! The press is not in the habit of treating us to reports about the innumerable times Linden Lab has handled a problem quickly, discreetly, and with little or no inconvenience to residents.
As it happens, Linden Lab closed the grid and addressed this bug immediately (for which I cannot give enough praise.) The question of what WOULD have happened if the bug was only reported to the Lindens quietly may be the subject of conjecture for a time to come. But after much discussion it would seem most residents offer this advice: "Give Linden Lab a chance to fix things before going public." About how much time to give, they mostly disagree.
This blogger offers the following advice: "If you go public, don't go public on a Linden Lab server."

1. If, as Cristiano posted to the "to report or not to report" thread comments, he didn't actually give instructions on how to repeat the bug, then this seems very unfair. I had assumed that he did give them, but the posts were hidden or destroyed before I followed the links.
Just reporting that a bug is as reported doesn't seem worthy of a 3 day ban.
Maybe the Lindens didn't read the thread properly before they binned it.
