War is Hell.
Fashion war is Hell with catty, bitchy, petty little ankle biters.
SL Fashion War is a venomous surgical strike against somebody with a sensitive and caring disposition timed perfectly with their recovery from major surgery. It's a plan that can go a long way to bolster the grand opening of a business project with calculated results in the "devastating" category. Take out the enemy, promote the business. Checkmate.
All that's left is the body count, which is the subject of this post. Torrid Midnight is leaving.
For those just receiving word from the front line, there is a war going on by Ambyance2 Anubis, Lost Thereian, and Starley Thereian against Mistress Midnight and Torrid Midnight because they modified purchased skins for personal use (not distribution or resale.) Those keeping score can mark as "killed in action" Torrid Midnight, who added eyeliner to Lost Thereian's skin for personal use. Torrid had the following to say about her departure from Second Life:
"I've been called a thief by unknown residents who can't spell to save their life in offlines, I've been called a no talent hack who created all their clothing from another game's textures, I've been called a bitch, a cunt, a nobody, a hasbeen, a scammer, a loser, and finally someone who should have saved everyone the trouble and just died during surgery. So that's it, that's all I can take, I don't have a hard outer shell that can be hammered over and over. I have never seen so much vile, evil, and nasty natured people in my entire life, including highschool."
Now, I omitted an introduction to Torrid because there are very few people who haven't already heard her seductive voice on the Second Cast podcast and the fashion spin-off The Goods. Most have already read about her monumental fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society which raised 1.2 million lindens and of course we are all fond of her beautiful fashions at TorridWear. Torrid took a great many people under her wing an has been profoundly helpful to budding fashion designers looking to make a start.
While only time will tell if Torrid will return to Second Life, Torrid's departure leaves in its wake a population saddened, confused, and angry with how events have unfolded.
"I think it's silly petty highschool bullshit to rip into someone for fair use. The fashion industry in SL shows it's pretty much just cliquey silliness if they're willing to cannibalize one of their own because they wanted to edit what they paid for. Hello, fair use? And I highly doubt most of the kids screaming bloody murder are saints themselves. Shall we pry open their closets to see what little secrets they're hiding, hmm? In short, Torrid did nothing wrong in my opinion, and the waves of attacks on her are just stupid, misguided, and bullshit." -Lordfly Digeridoo

"Someone crossed the line today when they told her they wished she'd done everyone a favor and died during surgery. I am absolutely sickened that someone would say that over a petty argument that should have been between 5 people. In order for Torrid to heal properly, she is taking a leave of absence and I can't say I blame her. She will be missed and I really hope she returns someday." -Moo Money
"It's always a shame when people lose sight of the fact that we're all real people here with real feelings. I hate to see things break down to the point of attacks like that. It's just no good for anyone." -Aru Opel
"We know you are a good person, and for those that think otherwise, forget them, that just means they don't know you, we should all take their comments as nothing more than meaningless jibber jabber." -Camie Cooper
"I just can't read this without crying. Folks, this started with EYELINER. Just keep that in mind. To the person who just had to butt in and name names regarding an issue 8 months dead, I hope your lovely blog accomplished what you hoped." -Mistress Midnight
"Everyone eventually makes a mistake, it's life. Forgive and forget, realize you make your own share of mistakes to hold such lame grudges all the time, NOBODY is perfect. SecondLife won't be the same without the lovely Torrid and her nicely plump ass.- :( It's sad to see her go, but I wish her the best. <3 We'll miss her tons!" -Kimberly Casanova
"Through all the times I've done my best to frighten Torrid she's always been a good sport about it. It's awful to see what horrible things people will do to a kind soul just to further their own ends." -Toxius Stephanopolis
"What can I say? It's just a sad day that SL loses such a beautiful person who's given so much to the community." -Francis Chung
Finally, let me add my own quote to the list...
"Torrid, I will remember the good things you have done with all the clarity with which your enemies remember the bad things. And I will remember what your enemies have done to you with equal clarity." -Aimee Weber

21. Personally, I'm going to go out on a very shaky limb here, but frankly, I believe in the principle of First-Sale rights. Once I've bought something, it's mine. I own it, and I can see fit to do with it as I please.
If I buy a book RL, I'm free to read it, to write over it, or to burn it among other things.
If I buy a CD, I'm free to listen to it, to write all over it, or burn it among other things.
If I buy a texture ingame, I'm free to use it, to write all over it, or to burn it among other things.
This is not stealing, nor shall it ever be. This is Fair Use and is completely protected by US law (which inherantly governs SL). I've personally ripped hundreds, if not thousands, of textures out of SL for my own personal curiousity and use. (No, I'm not going to tell you whose work I've taken.)
The world of SL is very much like the internet, and I'm tired of all these primadonna creators crying theft and misuse when you don't pay them for everything. Well, I hate to tell everyone this big secret, but anything in SL can be recreated and taken as your own. Every texture can be taken out and remade. Every prim can be recreated. Nothing is 100% safe, and it never will be. That's the way Second Life was made.
I make a point of buying people's creations that are worth it, but content creators need to know that once I buy it, it's mine. I own it, and I will continue to feel free to use it, write all over it, put eyeliner on it, or burn it among other things.
It's the world we live in, and it's perfectly legal. Deal with it.
