SL is a great place to have a secret. The mechanisms by which you can hide your identity, your lifestyle, your political affiliation, etc. are well-established and in place by default. There is no way for the average resident to divine who you truly are simply by talking with you.Even the subliminals are missing: tone of voice, body language, word choice -- all the clues that point toward either truth or untruth are subsumed by the somatic tics of the average avatar. You supply the sound of the voice as you read someone's words. The avatar has its preset cycle of idle animations which it repeats endlessly. People either type their sentences carefully or carelessly, and either way, any hidden meaning is lost unless it is supplied purposefully by the resident.
And yet, it's ridiculously easy to feel that you have trustworthy friends and loved ones in SL. Perhaps it's the shared camaraderie, slogging it out through repeated restarts, missing textures, and the ever-present Lag. Perhaps it's the ability to Search for people who share your interests, finding a Group to which you can belong. Whatever it is, it's frequently the case that people fall into each other's lives much more readily in SL than they do in RL, but with much less forethought about possible harm.
What happens, then, when that trust is betrayed? Residents, sound off; Horrify us with your tales of woe!

1. Well all that I can say is that I was amazed by the distrust in-world. As a total newbie, I set myself up with some skins and animations, met some people, and was given the third degree when I wouldn't 'confess' that I was an Alt. I couldn't possibly be a newbie because I had a nice skin and knew what a 'prim' was...
Wow.
