Elitism and security

Gated communityWell, dear reader, this space was meant for a report on an event in SL. I found out about it from a friend, and thought I would cover it for SL Insider. I was a little late in remembering, being deep in the text for a project I have been finishing off, but I mapped the friend and chose to teleport. No go. I IM'd to make sure he hadn't progressed to some sort of after-event on a desert island. He told me I would have to join a group in order to get to the event.

I searched the events list and found that this event wasn't even on the events list. Thus the "ordinary" resident of SL would never be in a position to request membership of the group, join it and attend. For that reason, I refused the proferred membership and declined to attend, on principle.

A few days ago I deplored the idea of charging $10 lindens entry for an educational event in order to deter griefers ... and now I deplore this practice of making worthwhile events elitist and barred to ordinary SL residents. It seems to me that if you have the power to hold an event on an island which is made invisible for anyone who isn't a member of the group, you have the power to kick and ban people from the land. We now have the power to stop people using push by objects or people ... why is such cloak and dagger stuff necessary?

I think it is unnecessary for most events. It seems to me that it's just letting the griefers win, if we all retreat to gated communities, and allow this disconnection to begin. What makes it totally bonkers is when you are actually launching something in SL that you are hoping people will buy. It seems to me that this sort of event could have the potential to really peeve a lot of people, not the effect you are going for, I would hazard, when you have a product to promote, or a company to sell.

Trying to artificially hype a band or a product by making it exclusive may work in RL, but I fear that people have misread the egalitarian nature of SL if they think it will win friends here. Nobody loves griefers (except possibly other griefers) but nor do they like hierarchies and elitism. When the mentor list heard about the $10 linden charge for the educational event, their first response (unprompted by me, I should add) was that they weren't going to attend, on principle.

People like the mentors, who spend a lot of time with new people in world, know that the majority of them are decent people, whether they have a whole sim or an unverified account. And they feel very protective of them too.

So be advised ... if you hold an event and want me to pay up, jump through hoops, or join a group in order to attend it, then you can forget me attending unless it is a private party with no SL or RL commercial link. If you want me to do any of those things in order for me to buy or publicise your products SL or RL, then you're crazy. I object to gated communities in RL, I sure as hell am not about to support them in SL.
