What's in a name?

Second Life Registration - Choose your second life name

His intimate friends called him "Candle-ends," And his enemies "Toasted-cheese." -- Lewis Carroll, The Hunting of the Snark.

It seems so simple, really. Choose a last name from the list, assuming you can find one you like (I think I was the last of the Ninos), then pick a first name. That's harder. Many people used to online services with large populations tap in a name and hammer in some random digits. I tried hard. I ended up picking a Japanese verb for mine. I don't regret that choice, although journalists have particular trouble with it.

But there's a bigger issue involved, and all too easily passed over...

"Please choose your Second Life name carefully, since it can't be changed later."

Why is that not in larger letters? Larger, contrasting letters. It doesn't tell you that people are likely to type your name...often; a lot. For which reason xXxxXD4rK3Lf0V3RLoRDxXxX is probably not a good idea for a first name. It might look great in the CRPG MMO of your choice as you go on raids, but probably people will end up calling you X or just laughing at it.

Long strings of binary digits (010000100100101101100001011011) will probably just get you called 'zero', or 'hey you'. Selecting a 1337 n4m3 will just get people report you as probably underaged.

Or you could just end up stuck with a lower case letter at the start of your name, awash in a sea of duly capitalized people. Or a joke name that has you rolling on the floor laughing...for all of fifteen seconds. Fiction's a bother too, unless you want to join a large crowd of Aragons, or an even larger collection of Gandalfs or Darths or Anakins.

Most of us don't really get much of a chance to choose our own names in the outside world, unless we change them - which may range from annoying (ever get a bank to try processing a change of address form? This is harder), to actually illegal in some countries.

This is your Second Life. Picture the person you want to be. Not the what, but the who - that would be you. Pick a name that's comfortable, hard-wearing that you wouldn't mind using in RL every day.

Choosing a name is the first step in your Second Life - don't choke, but make the most of it.
