Second Citizens, eager to dig into some post turkey day drama, were met with a bit of shocker earlier today. Like a bold scarlet letter, the following words appeared where the Second Citizen forum should have been: "This Account Has Been Suspended."
It turns out Apotheus Silverman of SLExchange, initiated the action when he discovered that a user under the name of SloppyBot posted code that was stolen from their terminals when Second Life was hacked around a year ago. This prompted Silverman to send a notice for the material's removal starting with an e-mail to the Second Citizen admin on Nov 16, a mail to their host on the 18th, and finally an e-mail to their ISP on the 22nd. The third notice resulted in the site's suspension.
The problem is, the e-mail Apotheus used to contact the Second Citizen administrator, Mother Stuchka (known as MOTHER FIC at Second Citizen), was long defunct. Due to past problems with e-mail spamming, admin@secondcitizen.com had long been removed from the website and was no longer the preferred means of contacting the administrator. Apotheus was only able to find that e-mail address after searching old forums posts. According to Stuchka, SC administrator requests are handled via Private Messages, in-world contact, and via Yahoo.
So Stuchka was blissfully unaware while Apotheus wrote his DCMA requests to SC's host and ISP.
OK, my 2 cents. Did any of this REALLY have to happen? I agree that Second Citizen should have a contact e-mail address. It's part of being a responsible administrator. On the other hand, it does feel like Apotheus did the minimum work necessary to give Second Citizen a chance to quickly fix the problem before legal escalation. While a short forum PM to MOTHER FIC could have ended the problem within hours, Silverman opted instead to search for an old e-mail address and write two different DCMA requests. Taking this route not only resulted in SC's suspension, but it also meant the code which Apotheus wanted removed remained publically available for over a week.
Nobody needed this.
The good news is, Second Citizen is already back in operation. So if the tryptophan hasn't already knocked you into a coma, go on over and post how you feel about this story.

1. I have to agree with you. I think that he should have at least posted to the forum or PMed the admin to take care of it. Would have made sure at least that he'd gotten through, rather than hunting for an old email.
