In front of me is a large board, called the Global Poverty Death Counter, telling me not to forget the real world, and indicating that 36.2 million children have died of global poverty since Second Life's inception. It's a grim and chilling reminder that outside comfortable, broadband-equipped first-world homes, there are real people, dying of poverty, hunger, disease and neglect.
WDM has come to Second Life to help spread the word, and to take advantage of the extra media attention that Second Life is enjoying at the moment. They hope to establish more outposts like this, where people can come and learn what they can do to help - and to use Second Life as a way of reaching and coordinating more campaigns around the world among geographically widespread groups.
The WDM are still feeling their way around Second Life -- looking for ways to make the real world better. But then ... aren't we all? Or are we?
While I've been standing here, talking to Parrot, the counter tells me another 700 children have lost their lives. You may not know them -- but somebody does. Whether you agree with the WDM and their campaigns or not, take a moment to think about those people.

1. Yeah, and this is TOTALLY how to get everyone in SL behind it... not. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/12/01/second_life_poverty/
