1. Honestly - what do you plan to do with any land you get? That's the real question. Based on that, you'll know how many prims you will need, and you'll know how many square meters you'll need... and from there, you can decide whether renting or owning is your best bet.

for my two cents, not that it's even worth that, get your 512 chunk o' land and be done with it!

make yourself a stellar dog house to live in and mark the places where you buried your bones. OH! and maybe a fire hydrant! OH! and get one of those kitty avies to be your toy that you chase in and out of your yard! (they're supposed to be nimble...they've got a chance of surviving.)

it really doesn't matter where your "freebie" land is because it will all change in a few days regardless. I started off being surrounded other newbies to the ownership. Now I am three-quarters surrounded by a slave/master clothing store. Not sure where everything when wrong...but my point is, it doesn't matter where. You're still going to have to listen to annoying roleplay dialogue and people infringing on your property lines....not that I am bitter in ANY way.

4. Todd, I think (and this is purely my impression) that Anshe generates negative sentiments amongst some for the same reason any successful person does.

Some people resent the attention she gets, as in "She's not doing anything special- just a land developer". Some folks dislike her business model, developing private/isolationist islands. And others are just jealous. Other than these factors, I'm not aware of her being involved in any shady practices: I've not heard anyone claim, for example, that she or her people have been involved in "land swooping".

Akela, regarding your question: the only functional thing that being a premium member changes is the ability to own land. Other than that, for myself it is a matter of feeling like a committed and contributing member of the society. Mind you, I became a premium member within 48 hours of first logging in for the first time, so I'm probably not the best person to ask :)

Regarding owning land and where to own it- that is a personal question, and what works for one person won't work for another. Generally, it's harder (or so I found at least) to get a nice, small piece of land on the mainland and retain the things I liked: a nice view, minimal lag, unintrusive neighbors.

That last part is probably key- finding an area with several neighbors of similar likes and dislikes to your own. You might not be able to afford half a sim, but if you get five or six like-minded folks together as neighbors you can probably keep your area in a way that suits your preferences.
