1. I have an Alt, he's maybe 5 months old. I mostly use him to test permissions on the items that I sell, or to help test something that I am scripting.

For some reason it feels strange to be in-world as another Avatar.

3. I understand that the people who develop the content management system are in the process of giving us the ability to run polls. I can see this being an interesting one.

Of course, we're an unrepresentative sample here, SLI readers and writers - but that's not to say that the results may not be interesting.

4. I possess two alts. Without giving away their identities (they're entitled to their own lives just like anybody else), I can say that they were originally created for purposes that are no longer operative. So, for the moment, one of them is "on ice," while the other gets a chance to experience the world occasionally, as well as being used for some more mundane purposes.

6. I just got my first alt because the last name of "Chapman" came up as a name and of course I wanted to get my own name as an Alt. I haven't used it yet but am contemplating making my current account my alt and shifting over. I don't know.

7. I have one I originally created around a year ago to spend time with a friend who was being Griefed By Drama and wanted a new account to hang with a few friends- so her friends all got alts including me. It grew more social than originally intended, eventually most people I had on my friends list from that account I introduced to the main me anyway. I still keep it current for tier and the 500/wk is handy. I made a new one for building quietly recently. The privacy tools are foiled by my store online trackers and friends online page anyway, not to mention general friends list problems meant I've already been mistaken for "hiding offline" when in visible sight of people. I have never (except to test it worked) used the Hide online status option, preferring to use the alt. I rarely use this alt- I still spend more time yakking than building- but if for one evening I just need to do some work, it's there. It also has a nice clean inventory with very little but textures in it which is handy.

8. So let me get this straight? A real life person makes and alt called an avatar in Second Life. For Second Life the avatar makes an alternative avatar. Wouldn't this be Third Life? Ouch, my head hurts.
OK, actually I have an alt for now. I'm setting up an avatar for my RL husband. He's not as into SL as I am, so I'm pre-prepping his avy before I show him around.

9. I have one alt for testing purposes. I just don't feel comfortable giving out or selling stuff until I tested it for too much permissions or too little.
Too little can really be fatal for the books I do since they use many textures that all need to have the right permissions or they will not show.

12. My primary avatar is female. I have a male alt. If I want to explore without being hit on, I use the alt. I find the difference in how the two avatars are treated fascinating.

14. I have two, one which is used quite a bit, and the other, was obtained simply because you needed three members to a group.. (is that still the case??) My primary alt is my machinima camera-girl, logged in my industrial-strength workstation, doing the FRAPS video recording, and my primary av (me, Tas) logs in the laptop, and stars in my videos (none of which are done yet...)

17. In golf we have a saying: "any fool can hit a second ball." Or converted to here: any fool can live a second life... and it's only one of the advantages of alts, I believe.

And I would like to make my compliments the Insiders. And I would like to suggest: make a poll out of it, please. I believe there are quite some people interested in statistics on this topic. Quantitative data might be of more value than 'just' comments.

18. I have an alt that I use as a bank or atm of sorts (out of sight, out of mind, works for me), and one alt that I registered simply because the name was available (though I occasionally use that account for other reasons (like logging in and not getting a flood of IM's)

19. I use an alt to check how the world sees me, not looks, but permissions on my land (including security range limit), on the items I sell and how my group membership appears. I have also used it to help me set up dance animations (adjusting poseballs), but then I have to use 2 laptops side by side for that - both AVs running side by side, most weird...

20. I'm one of those dumb furries. While I don't have an alt, some of my friends do. Usually furries have multiple characters theyve come up with that are usually different species. So they'll go and reflect those characters in SL too. I have also heard of some having alts to sneak around behind their boyfriend/girlfriend's back lol (but maybe that's happening to me so I shouldn't be lauging lol)

Oh also griefers. They like alts. And furries too :P
