Second Life Viewer Source Code released

Well the first of my 2007 predictions hit the turf a little earlier than planned. The source code for the Second Life Viewer has been released to the public, under the GPLv2 Free Software license. There's a section of the website set aside for it, including links to a wiki with building instructions. This is the wiki that was previously announced with the volunteer portal on it. More on that later.

If you are technically minded, and familiar with building alien source trees, you can sit down and make the client do what you want it to do that it doesn't, sufficing only that the servers permit it. Plans are afoot to offer bounties for features and improvements, though no bounties are on offer yet.

Smart money says that the client will see more than 500 downloads before midnight.

But seriously, it'll be interesting to see how the SL client improves with this, now that it becomes possible to chop and change stuff around in the code...

1. A AIML-Parser module with SL-Specific tags to allow people to build chat and movebots for times where mere non-agent external comms isn't good enough.

2. Replacing LL's borked Ratings system with a alternate system such as BanLink, or Trustnet

3. Coding a gag for group IMs.

4. exposing security flaws that wouldn't be noticed if the code had remained visible only to a few pairs of eyes.

5. Cross-Metaverse communications: pick up a prim phone, and dial a call out to some hut in Croquet. Or Multiverse.

6.Having a good laugh at some of the comments that LL programmers have put in over the last 5 years...

These are interesting times indeed!

4. Excellent! Although it seems the client is relatively bug-free at the moment (as opposed to the server infrastructure), opening the source is a positive move to keep things fresh, efficient, and bug-free.
