Sony Wants You to Come Home
Sony plans to launch its own virtual space, called Home, in April as a free beta download, with full launch in the Fall. The link embedded in the picture will take you to our cousin Engadget's article, which includes a video that's worth the viewing.
Home seems to have everything going for it: gorgeous rendering; avatar customization (up to a point; no non-human avs available); the ability to chat via text, audio, and apparently voice (though it's unclear how exactly that will manifest); the ability for users to decorate their apartments with their own photos, music, and videos; game areas in common, etc. The one missing element in its comparison with SL is, of course, the ability of users to create their own content.
Obviously it's too early to make any predictions on how popular this will be, but man ... look at those visuals, will ya? I'll keep my eye on this and make more of it when more becomes available.

(Page 1)2. I believe this is PS3 exclusive ... cool thing, everyone gets their own apartment in Home. Nice.
This is supposed to be the PS3 version of Nintendo's Wii world community.

3. I wish SL looked like that.
As an aside...they're sitting on prims! Look:

4. Although the graphics seem stunning to me, it doesn't seem like a threat at all to SL simply due to the fact that you can't script in it AND that it's a console game.

5. I think this looks pretty good overall. I don't think it's a threat at all to SL because it doesn't offer nearly as much as SL does. Plus, imagine the repurcussions when parents find their kids watching/listening to inappropriate content.
The real purpose of this thing is actually to compete with Xbox Live's implementation of online game play and a probable similar version of this by Nintendo. It will not provide near the experience of SL (even if the graphics are far better) as it is mostly meant for gamers to hook up with each other in order to play games online, look at high scores, and show off their purchases or prizes that have been won via their gaming. I don't think Sony intends for it to be anything near SL, at least at this point. But anyway, who's to say SL couldn't look that good? That's basically the only difference anyway, what with SL incorporating voice and video and who knows what else.

7. Lovely visuals, nice looking avatars, nice movement. I bet it will be successful. Not quite a competitor to SL, more like a second cousin. It is console dependent and seems more like a nice add-on to the console online gaming environment and less like a standalone concept or destination.
The social element of SL is huge, and Home will likely score well in that category. You go on, see who of your friends are on, hang out and chat, dance, buy stuff to tweak your look or your home, go play something together. All of that sounds like my SL experience except the last part, not that the last part isn't possible in SL. And think of the percentage of people in SL who never build or script. It's still chatroom 2.0 for them, so they're not using a lot of the things that make SL a fuller concept than Home. So Home might satisfy them in a similar way, if more narrowly due to the lack of user-generated content, concepts, and activities.
It's missing huge swaths of the sL experience and potential and obviously looks more controlled - more gamey and less platformy. I'll never see it, not being a gamer or having the console, but I think it'll be nice for the PS3 user base.
Toss it into the ring of similar concepts, which the futurists tell us will begin to crossover, connect, and merge over time. Interesting to think about.

1. In theory it wouldn't be bogglingly difficult to make the SL client run on the PS3. It could probably do a good job of handling things at full-detail too.
