Having written a piece about teaching history in SL, I thought I'd go an have a look at someone that created a space that does just that. The Jewish Historical Museum, Synagogue and Community Center isn't a name that trips entirely easily off the tongue. Histories of the Jewish peoples tend to make uncomfortable viewing too: although there are a number of great people who are Jewish, the spectre of the holocaust has to be remembered.
The Jewish Historical Museum, Synagogue and Community Center does a good job of remembering the people and the holocaust. It is very reminiscent of a traditional museum, with displays and text about them to read (delivered by notecard in SL of course). Normally I have to say I prefer immersive experiences, I've got a RL background in interactive science exhibitions and in re-enactment/living history in both the Viking and Late Pre-Roman Iron Age (that's Celts to most of us) peoples. Whilst SL could be used to make a concentration camp I'm sure, it's one bit of history I think I'll prefer to explore the more traditional way thank you, although there are Holocaust museums which provide a more immersive experience in the world. I didn't go and explore the Synagogue, but both sections to the museum are well worth a visit.
