It's finally happened: LL will be charging residents a monthly recurring fee after a one-time purchasing fee for the ability to choose their own first and last names. Ostensibly enabled to allow 'high-profile' users such as politicians, celebrities, etc. the use of their own names, this is a feature that many people have been clamoring for since the inception of SL. This service is expected to roll out by the end of the year. This story has been around for a while, but this is the first time we're getting a release date, as it were. However, I have a few questions. Is a monthly fee really necessary? I can see it being a simple operation to just switch a user's name over once, so what's the maintenance for? I can't imagine it affecting server issues at all.
Also, does the name change apply to any instances of a resident's created objects? Will the resident have to edit those objects by hand? Will there be another fee to change back to the original name if desired? Time will tell, but lemme ask you all this: Is the fee too much to pay?

1. It would be well worth it to dump the "Mariner" part of my own name and get the desired name of "Mister Crap" but will the Lindens have a list of banned names in addition to the antipoaching/authentication procedures?
