If you venture into many of the educational sims today, you will find the world in darkness. Started to my mind at the Kula sims, where, at 8pm yesterday a candlelight vigil was held and well attended by educators from around the world, the teachers are mourning, draping their land in darkness for the memory of those killed in Virginia yesterday.
I am no longer surprised by the solidarity and grief that runs throughout Second Life with these tragedies. I'm getting used to the idea that news from anywhere in the globe actually closely affects someone I know. But I'm still deeply touched to see so many others coming together to mourn.
With apologies to Christy Moore, I'd like to finish with a chorus of his, slightly adapted:
So play the drums slowly
And play the pipes lowly
For I'm a young scholar
Cut down in my prime.

1. My brother goes to school there. Pretty scary. Luckily he wasn't there though.
