Linden Lab promises voice ... and GBH

Linden Lab updates us on the voice deployment. Shout out to those .. umm homies err 'dawg'

According to Linden Lab (who are taking pains to make the schedule for voice deployment clearer) a new First Look viewer will be made available "within the next few weeks" that supports voice on the main grid (Agni). Like other First Look viewers before it, it will be beta-code, in flux for testing, but being on the live grid, anything it does is as permanent as the official viewer.

After all the testing and tuning is done, the final version of this First Look branch will become the official mandatory download, becoming in essence, the official Second Life viewer. Linden Lab have also partnered with GBH (as anyone from the UK or Australia will laughingly tell you stands for "Grievous Bodily Harm" in conversation) to provide deals on headsets.

2. The main viewer now paforms worst than before the last first look viewer.... its all doom an gloom for the mac user at the moment.

3. I've got some theoretically good news on that front. One open source developer has been madly plugging resource and memory leaks and other weirdness for the last week or so. Earlier this week I had an opportunity to try a custom build with his changes worked in.

Best damn viewer experience I've had with SL. Ever.
These changes have been submitted to Linden Lab and will hopefully make their way into one of the next viewer releases.

5. I'm on a Mac, and things have been fine for me so far.

It sure would be nice if there could be some diagnostic which would tel a user "this lag problem is client side" or "server side." But I expect something like that would take forever to write and change regularly as well, so it's a pie-in-the-sky hope.
