The creator of the original Multi-User Dungeon (or Domain) gave an interview to Keith Stuart of the Guardian, where he opined on the efficacy of text chat, altruism in online spaces, and the 3D Internet, among other things. It's an interesting read, and I found myself agreeing with much of what Bartle said.I remember playing around in an AOL chatroom back in The Day, and realizing what a profound freedom the experience afforded me: the ability to be anything, do anything without the limitations of actual graphics or interfaces was, in retrospect, pretty profound. Of course, at the time I wished I could see everything that was being described, so that makes me think that we'll always wish for more than we have, no matter how many bells and whistles we put into our toys.
