NMC Poster session in SL

NMC recently held a conference IRL and have made the posters available to see in SL. Nothing wrong with that, you'd think.

Sadly, there is a problem. At the end of May, over my personal blog I wrote an entry about importing presentations into SL. In particular I emphasised the point that SL is a video medium, not a print medium. Your monitor probably has 72dpi, your printer at least 300dpi. There's lots of things that means, but one of the big things: it's easier to read print on paper than on the screen UNLESS the print is sized for the screen, just because there's better resolution of the dots - that give you the shape of the letters. Powerpoint presentations work well, glossy brochures don't in SL.

This display suffered from that - the picture is of a prize winning poster on display in SL. I picked it purely because it is a prize winning poster. Sadly, in SL, even zooming in, it's almost illegible. Precisely 2 of the posters didn't suffer from this. Some were basically illegible even zoomed in, although I'm sure they worked well IRL.

It's a shame really - the bits I could read were interesting, I'm sure the actual posters were great, but the message needs to be changed for the medium - how good is a poster if you just can't read it?
