Who Are We? - Mygdala March

Second Life resident, Mygdala MarchThis is the ninth in a series of largely demographic interviews that are conducted with established residents, to find out more about them and their involvement with Second Life, and to contrast the differences between their views and experiences and those of the newer residents. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

Myg is eclectic, lyrical, fun, witty, thoughtful and caring. I met her through the blogging circuit, and have mightily enjoyed the chances we've had to chat. So, let's find out who she is...

Second Life Name: Mygdala March

Second Life Age: 224 days

Label your subculture in Second Life. (Can be all the cultures you're involved in, or some part thereof.)

Eclectic blogger, writer, poser and closet superhero.

Who is your favorite Second Life celebrity and why? (This could be a Linden you like, perhaps someone well known in your community, etc)(Content creators are covered in the next question.)

Sue Stonebender. I don't know if she's a celebrity or not, but she's sorta well known and she really leverages Second Life in creative, socially powerful ways. She also uses multiple platforms to connect with people. I was really amazed with her charity work through the better world kiosks and Ubuntu.

Do you have a favorite Second Life content creator (scripter, builder, artist, machinima, music, etc), and why? (Anyone whose work you personally like.)

Well Arcadia Asylum, to be sure. I wrote a story for my blog called Met a Stranger that was inspired by her Slum City build. I appreciate how detailed her work is and how she gives it away. She deserves some kind of good citizen award. I shot a whole series in Slum City for my Met a Stranger story; It was the build that inspired me to write it.

What do you prefer to do in Second Life as regards content creation (scripting, building, artistic, machinima, music, OR NONE, etc), and why?

I consider myself a writer in Second Life, and while that's not exactly creating content in Second Life, it does feed some of the community building that I am involved in. I'd love to be able to build, but I just don't have the technical skill. I try to nurture community by blogging and having events in Topgol, where my RL partner Alexander Burgess and I own a lot of land and work collaboratively with our neighbors to have a coherently themed sim.

What sort of events (if any) do you prefer to attend?

I'm not a big fan of huge parties, even though I go to a fair share of them. I like smaller events where there's a chance to really interact with others. I am more likely to attend a small music set or a chat on the corner than go to Sanctuary or something.

What would prevent you from attending an event? (Technical, ethical, mood considerations, other people, etc)

LAG! (hahahahaha) The main reason I avoid events is because when I'm here, I'm usually working on met a stranger, which means I'm scouting locations, lining up avatars to model, etc and that takes a ton of time in-world. Unfortunately it kills my social life sometimes but it's what I do here, and I really enjoy doing it. That said, some of my favorite things to do in Second Life are to hang on a corner in Topgol and just shoot the breeze with whoever drops in. A lot of my ideas come from just that.
