Given the offending quote is:

"According to the orchestra, 9 million Second Life denizens watched the performance live on Second Life's own cable network, and the broadcast repeats every couple of hours through November. (It's available on demand to Second Life "residents.")"

I could see how this could be a misquote... Maybe Adam or Eric Reuters should have written that piece.

2. That does seem numerically totally unhinged by an order of magnitude.

However it does point to the fact that people dealing in audience metrics need to be able to speak a new language in the context of SL based performance and entertainment.

Perhaps audiences could be portrayed in terms of "value" rather than "quantity", with those watching live being qualitatively more valuable than those watching live on a feed, who in turn have higher perceived value than those watching repeat of that feed. Dunno, just thinking out loud.

And even a minuscule fraction of that quoted figure would make advertisers sit up and take plenty notice more than they are at the moment. And perhaps that's the most obvious indication that we're not reaching those numbers yet, no matter how brilliant the performance.

3. we don't even have 9 million active users (aka residents acoreding to a definition I read somewhere some time ago), and even if we did have as many active as there are registred accounts, no way everyone would watch the presentation

4. It's the sort of mistake that's made by someone who doesn't really know or read anything about Second Life. It inclines me to think that the orchestra's press person made the mistake and that Reuters didn't check it.

I am the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Royal Livepool Philharmonic and I just want to clarify that we have never issued any statement saying that our event in Second Life reached 9 million people. Nor did anyone from Reuters contact us about this piece. I think the reporter perhaps got confused about the potential reach of the cable TV channel in Second Life, although event this sounds high...
