He is proposing a clear liquidation plan of his own - for full details read his website. The highlights - Everyone get Ginko stock value to Shaun by the end of October, he'll say what the state of play is on 1st November, liquidate the assets (and say who is still holding any others as best he can), and give the money to Luke to buy out the Ginko bonds so they can be delisted. All GBP holders get some (size to be determined) bottom line return to walk away from it all.

Nobody Fugazi is in agreement with Shaun's analysis of the merits of the WTF plan - a quick bit of back of the envelope stuff at my end gives the same numbers too. Like Nobody, I won't tell you what you should do with your money - it's got to be your choice. It all comes down to a balance of trust - Luke (and maybe Nicholas) v Shaun. Nicholas Portocarrero can't make the interest payments and has shut the Ginko Perpetual Bonds, transferring them to WSE Trader Funds (WTF - honestly!) which are the new fraud funds from WSE.

At first glimpse this looks like a good idea. I was chatting to someone who hadn't (as I did) bitten the bullet and pulled out my savings at around the 20c levels, and just prior to this GPBs were circulating at 10c or lower - very not good, and very hard for interest payment capital. However, Shaun Altman has examined the numbers a little more closely, factored in the other frauds that are likely to be transfered to this fund soon, and estimates, if you're lucky, you'll get 0.02c (2% return if you wish to think of it that way) on your defrauded L$. Ouch.

(Thanks to Shaun for the initial link.)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Yesterday's Money: 19th October

Let's face it, the odds are pretty good. Credit cards aren't so common outside of North America. Without a profitable business, how are you going to get a hold of Linden Dollars to actually spend in Second Life?

Paypal is the answer for some, but not for everyone. Enter the oddly named Bulido. An otherwise ordinary-seeming Linden Dollar currency exchange, but in addition to the usual payment options, they also accept Ukash vouchers. Now, I'm not terribly familiar with Ukash myself, being on the other side of the world and all, but people I know in Europe tell me that (at least in some countries) Ukash can be readily obtained at newsagents, post-offices, shops, gas-stations, banks and so forth.

Ukash is operated by Smart Voucher PLC which is regulated by the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) as an ELectronic Money Institution (ELMI), and has only apparently been around for three years, but apparently is expanding quite rapidly, filling a void left by the absence of ubiquitous credit card adoption.

Bulido itself, appears to be the work of Austrian developer Crafty Studios and has been going since July 2007.

Has anyone yet used Bulido, or found some other way to get Linden Dollars with Ukash? Let us know about your experiences.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Yesterday's Money: 16th October

However, this time there was an interesting comment in there:

September saw a major recovery from the sudden slump in Lindex sales in August. While July had shown nearly US$600,000 in sales, August's sales had dropped to US$163,239, but recovered in September to a much healthier $573,501.
This is, as anyone who follows my daily reports, can tell you, nonsensical at first sight. Today's report is about typical - US$59,000, which gives us monthly sales of somewhere around US$1.75 Million, rather than about US$0.5Million.

The difference lies in what they mean: LindeX sales from the monthly summary are actually supply linden sales, rather the sum of daily sales figures (which is somewhat confusing, but there you go). From Linden Labs perspective $593,501 is far healthier than $163,239, because it is, essentially, pure profit for them. From our perspective though what does it mean? Well, Supply Linden was introduced as a tool to control exchange rates, albeit only in one direction, and to keep them stable. When someone (or some subroutine more likely) notices a tendency for the L$ to strengthen too much, LL put out some L$ on the market at a suitable price. Supply increases and the price drops - in this case the drive to strengthen the L$ is abated. August was obviously a month with relatively little pressure that way, September more typical.

You can question the value, and even the ethics of this process - many people did when it was announced. Whether or not you agree with it, and despite my doubts amongst many others, the process does work. The exchange rate varies a bit of course, but floats around the L$270 mark quite reliably, and has done for as long as I've kept records and indeed for over a year now.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
