Adjusting to a new world - The Newbie Tourist

This is the fifth in our 'Adjusting to a New World' series of articles for beginners - although some intermediate and advanced Second Lifers are also finding little tidbits that they didn't know in them. We've talked about movement, communication and clothing. We're going to divert a little and talk about places to go when you're new.

For a new resident (and even for people who have been around for some while), the sheer size of Second Life can be daunting. Where should one go, what should one do, when one is not familiar with what is available? Below I present (in no particular order) a small selection of useful and interesting places to visit.

Adjusting to a New World - Clothing

Clothing and dressingThis is the fourth in our 'Adjusting to a New World' series of articles for beginners - although some intermediate and advanced Second Lifers are also finding little tidbits that they didn't know in them. In the last two columns we talked about communication. This time, we're going to talk about clothing as we move towards avatar appearance settings.

Adjusting to a New World - Instant Messaging

Instant messaging is a key Second Life communications toolThis is the third in our 'Adjusting to a New World' series of articles for beginners - although some intermediate and advanced Second Lifers are also finding little tidbits that they didn't know in them. Last time, we talked about communicating by chat.

This time, we'll look at instant messaging. Instant messaging, either to single people, multiple people or defined groups is an indispensable tool for getting assistance and information. As you get more connected with people in Second Life, you'll find yourself using it more, but there's no reason not to know the ins-and-outs early on.

Adjusting to a New World - Communicating by Chat

Shout This is the second in our 'Adjusting to a New World' series of articles for beginners - although some intermediate and advanced Second Lifers are also finding little tidbits that they didn't know in them. Last time we talked about moving around.

This time, our topic is communication. You may not have come to Second Life to be social, but you need to know how to communicate. If you can't communicate, you can't get help, and you will need help at some point. We all do. Second Life is so communications-centric that today we'll be focusing on just chat. There's a lot to say.

Adjusting to a New World - Moving around

Second Life is full of things that just aren't obvious. This is the start of a new series where we'll talk you through the details of interacting with Second Life. We'll be talking about a whole lot of the basics in the coming weeks, so stay tuned. If you have a friend who is new to Second Life and having troubles with learning the basics, send them our way, and with a bit of luck we'll have the information they're looking for.

The first, and most obviously counter-intuitive thing you'll face is just moving around the virtual world. The default view has a camera looking past your avatar from behind. That's called third person mode. We'll talk about moving that camera around another time. The first thing you'll probably notice is that, as you move your mouse around the screen, your avatar's head turns to follow it.
