Who are we? Laetizia Coronet

Second Life resident, Laetizia CoronetThis is the 17th in a series of largely demographic interviews that are conducted with established residents, to find out more about them and their involvement with Second Life, and to contrast the differences between their views and experiences and those of the newer residents. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

Laetizia's a forthright, outspoken and interesting Second Life blogger, whom I have been running into increasingly of late in various venues. You can trust Laetizia to speak her mind - so I decided to contact her to let her do just that.

Second Life slows and stutters

Second Life grid suffers slowness, and other oddities.Residents are reporting issues with teleportation, inventory loading, teleportation slow or failing, object rezzing (slow or failing), group IMs (slow or failing), login problems, and the presence issues (that's the friends list to most of us) problems that became more of a problem after yesterday's update have apparently significantly deteriorated.

Approximately thirty minutes after resident reports began to reach us, Blue Linden has reported same on the Linden blog and tells us that Linden Lab developers are in the process of trying to diagnose and correct the problem.

Second Life closed until about noon.

Send more bananas!
The Second Life grid is down for approximately 6 hours while Linden Lab updates the platform to version 1.16.0. Blue Linden will be providing updates as to the progress of the work on the Linden Blog.

Assuming the update is not aborted part way through, you will need a new viewer. You can either let the automatic downloader take care of it, or when the time comes you can point your favorite download manager at the correct link on this page, and have it downloaded in under a couple of minutes, speeding up the login process for you and for everyone else.

We at SLI would like to wish you a calm wait, and hopefully a smooth experience after the grid comes back up. See you on the other side.

Present but not presence

The grid talks to itself.Blue Linden reports that the Second Life grid is experiencing a presence issue. If you log out, you may not be able to log back in, because - the system hasn't apparently noticed that you're gone yet. The advice is that if you are unable to log back in, wait 30 minutes then contact Customer Support.

The presence system has had a bit of a fraught history, particularly since the day Second Life 1.9 was deployed. Formerly teleportation, sim-border-crossings, instant messages, group invitations and vote-proposals were handled through central servers. Then those servers started to get busier and busier. It was decided, in the interests of scalability, that sims should communicate with each-other in a more direct fashion.
