Second Life backbone overloaded, search down

Just after peak load today, at decidedly non-record concurrency levels, the grid suffered some fairly severe issues for the space of half an hour. These issues have returned to us, in the last 20 minutes (commencing at approximately 9:50pm SLT). Residents are reporting object and inventory issues, asset loading problems, upload problems, failed teleportations and sim border crossings, and the failure of map search or other search functions. Additionally the population data feeds began to perform erratically, pointing towards backbone overload.

The earlier incident sparked no acknowledgment from Linden Lab. Things have been problematic for only 20 minutes now, so it may be a bit too soon to expect Linden Lab to respond. User concurrency was at 27,113 at the start of the troubles, and has fallen by over 2,000 since then.

[Update. LL's Chadrick Linden responded with a blog post at 10:30pm SLT, acknowledging the problem - well, at least the search part of the problem. As of 10:55pm, search remains non-functional, and other problems including payments and account balances remain sporadic.]

[Update: 11:51 PM - It turns out fixing search is going to take more than initially thought, it will probably be down for most of the night. We apologize for the inconvenience and will have a team of crack Operations people patching it up in the morning.

I presume that means they're very good, rather than they are too busy making crack to work on the problem ;) ]

Acting your age - or some other age.

Acting your age, or out of it.On the 8th of March we sought clarification for an ambiguous-seeming sentence at the end of a warning notice that was being distributed by Chadrick Linden. That sentence was:

"Any account asserting an age that does not meet Second Life's minimum age of eligibility will be closed."

What we wanted to know was whether that referred to the claimed age of the avatar (particularly where it came to role-playing purposes). After all, it was pretty clear that the claimed age of the user was covered by this - but what about role-players, you know, role-playing?

Linden Lab aids verification of alternate accounts

Alternate accounts with incorrect contact details may be held.Chadrick Linden points out that the Risk and Governance teams continue to tighten things up, so we can expect more holds to on accounts with inaccurate information. To make things easier (for them and for the rest of us) they've made it possible for accounts that are held because of this to log into the website and change/update their email contact details.

We asked Linden Lab if that was the only criteria they were checking. It is not, but we were not told exactly what information is being checked - having a correct, working email address that you can be contacted on, however, seems to be a key item to getting your details corrected should there be a problem. There seems to be delays in getting those alternate accounts unheld however. We are uncertain but there may be a lot of them. Hundreds. Thousands, perhaps. Maybe more.

Rolling restart imminent

Rolling restart at 20:00 SLTChadrick Linden shouts out that a rolling restart of all regions is about to commence in order to "fix some issues with our backend". What the issues are, exactly, aren't specified, nor is what changes have been made. When I've got issues with my own backend, I find a large warm glass of salty water does the trick. The restart should commence on or about 8PM SLT.

No information is given as to whether this restart will proceed in the north-to-south/east-to-west fashion in rows, as they usually do, or in the alphabetical order which was used in the last rolling restart. You get a few minutes warning, but you have to stay on the ball, and figure out relatively quickly where you have to jump to.

Internal network issues continue to plague grid

Grid servers are unhappyThrough the day today the routing issues, which began early this-morning, continue to be a problem. The inability for some servers to communicate with each-other is causing widespread teleport failures, slow object rezzing, issues with teleportation failures and stalled upload queues that are causing sims to choke and restart.

Linden Lab reports that they have been working on it as a priority item all day, and are continuing to try to stabilize as many regions as possible. It is not entirely clear whether this is an issue with the work done to the networks recently, or whether it is a new issue in Linden Lab's new communications backbone system. These issues are also reportedly affecting the Teen Grid.

All we can do at this stage is cross our fingers and hope that they can get it together.

[Update 4:41 SLT: Chadrick Linden reports that the problem has been found and fixed and that things will return to normal soon]
