Credit Where Credit is Due

There's an interesting post by Forseti Svarog over at SLOG regarding Linden Lab's habit of using resident IP for promotional purposes without attribution. Long story short, Linden Lab used Forseti's iVillage fashion show video, but not only did they fail to credit him, they literally edited the video to remove the existing credits!!

I actually had a conference call with Catherine Smith and former LL Marketing director David Fleck about this very issue about a year ago. At the time the problem was a series of Linden Lab press releases that not only failed to credit the residents responsible for the projects, but were easily misinterpreted as crediting Linden Lab for these projects!

LL Acknowledges Inventory Issues

Without so much as a word from other Lindens until now, Torley LInden has commented on an earlier entry from today with a blog post. In the blog, they acknowledge that there have been some inventory issues, including the complete newbie wipe I am suffering, while linking to my original post about the issue. They offer some likely scenarios related to inventory issues and the steps to report them. Comments are turned off, which is probably a wise move considering how angry and scared some of the residents are.

Known victims of the wipe at this time are moo Money (me), Jaxi Morrison, wife of SLProfiles creator Yo Brewster, Tatiana Vanguard, and Forseti Svarog, of the Electric Sheep Company. If you are a victim of the newbie inventory wipe, please post a comment here and I will add your name to the list.

Date a Designer Auction to Benefit Relay For Life

I'm going fashion crazy today, but I can't help it! Shai Delacroix passed me an invite to a Date a Designer Auction put on by her Relay For Life teams, Shopaholics for a Cause and Shopaholics for a Cure. The event takes place on Saturday, April 7th, at 12pm PST on the Nuka Hiva sim. The attire for the event is luau, so bring your leis! Ten high-profile designers will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to Relay For Life. You own their products, but now you can own them for a couple of hours!

The designers participating are:

  • Blaze Columbia - Blaze
  • Forseti Svarog - Figments
  • Canimal Zephyr - Canimal
  • Digit Darkes - X3D Apparel
  • Lucas Lameth - Earthtones Boutique
  • Truth Hawks - TRUTH
  • Colleen Desmoulins - The Loft
  • Aradia Dielli - Perfect Image
  • Shai Delacroix - Casa del Shai
  • Pushbutton Skolnick - Pushbutton Industries
  • Auctioneers - Sean Clancy & Ryan Darragh - Second Man magazine

SLCC loose ends

So, farewell then SLCC for another year. The full SLCC itinerary is here. I haven't seen any reports of Sunday's sessions yet, or any links to the video of the conference sessions on Saturday.

As I wasn't able to see Mitch Kapoor's speech, I didn't report on it, but there is a report on 3pointD here.

Tao Takashi has gathered some random bits about SLCC here.

Forseti Svarog gathered some random statistics here.

Katt Kongo blogs about going to Linden Lab here.

For those who read Cory's speech and wondered what Primitar looked like (the original avatar) you can see pictures here.

I should say that the conference seems to have been a social success based upon the lack of reporting lol. I am assuming that if it had been terrible, there would have been hundreds of blow-by-blow blogs about it from the

Places for new people: Gnubie store

Tucked away in a laggy corner of indigo (well it is for me!) is the Gnubie store, one of the least well-known gems of SL.

The philosophy behind it is that it should provide well-made items for new people, at a minimal cost, with full permissions, but issued under a strict licence. These things should only be sold or passed on in accordance with that licence. Don't sell them at yard sales, people. You will find items from some of the best builders and creators in SL, here.

The idea is that the items thus sold will allow people new to Sl to take apart furniture and learn to make their own; let them texture the item, or recolour it. some items are specifically set up for the purposes -- see the merry-go-round made by Forseti Svarog, for example.

One of the people who has put many hours into the Gnubie store, Jai Nomad, was one of the first people I met in world, and was very kind to me over my first weeks and months. Many of the houses and buildings on sale here were made by her.
