SLRFL: Opening marred by grief

Second Life Relay For Life has only been open a short few hours, but already it has been marred by attacks on the 32 sims. It started about two hours before the event when a whopping *12* sims were down for the count. According to the Security team, they may have suffered an attack and asked that build be turned off. A short time later, all sims were back up.

That did not stop griefers from attacking the Ceremony Centre during Jade Lily's opening speech. Suddenly she was enveloped and standing on a mound of earth, instead of the stage where she had previously been. A creative individual terraformed the sim to raise and lower land. At this time, W-Hat is fixing the land since Lindens weren't available to roll it back.

Please don't let this stop you from visiting SLRFL! Hopefully that was the last of it as all precautions have been made to prevent further attacks. I hope to see you there!

Second Life Boutique gets a second life

Jade Lily of Electric Sheep Company is announcing a new look, functionality and name for SL-Boutique. We are told:

"On July 23rd, 2007, we will be taking a major leap forward with a new commerce website with significantly improved dependability, usability, and inworld capabilities. The old SL-Boutique name is being retired and the new site is called Shop OnRez."

Emails are being sent out to people registered at SL-boutique as I write this, and the announcement heads up the website itself. We're told everything is migrating from the old system to the new; accounts, funds, products. The SL-Boutique system will be shut down in the morning on Monday July 23, and return under the new name "Shop OnRez" by some time on Tuesday, July 24.

Just Askin': Are you going to SXSW?

South by Southwest, or SXSW for short, is rapidly approaching. Scheduled for March 9th-18th in Austin, Texas, it is an annual festival that celebrates music, movies, and web development. Attended by over 10,000 people from all over the world, it is a staple of Austin tourism. It is known for giving bands their big break and panelists major credibility.

Some of our very own Second Life residents will be speaking on panels there, including Spin Martin, Aren Mandala, Hamlet Au, BuhBuhCuh Fairchild, Zero Grace, SnoopyBrown Zamboni, Reuben Tapioca/MillionsofUs, qDot Bunnyhug, Walker Spaight, RC Mars, and Jade Lily. The topics they are covering vary wildly, such as Your Video Blog Can Save the World, Terraforming the Internet: When 3d Models Meet Business Models, Avatar-Based Marketing in Synthetic Worlds, On the Edge of Independant User-Creation in Gamespace, Sex and Computational Technology, Web 2.0 to Web 3D, Gamers Games: Microcontent and User Creation, and American Cancer Society: Applying Technology for the Nonprofit Sector. Other residents rumored to be attending are Max Case, Jeremy Neumann, Glitchy Gumshoe, and myself.

There is a group in Second Life, appropriately named "SXSW'ers". If you are interested in attending and would like to hear about meetups, join that group. For now, I'm just askin' if you're going! Well ... are you?
