New Resident Experiences - Roisin Hotaling

Roisin HotalingThis is the third in a series of interviews that will be conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

I met Roisin Hotaling as she was tinkering about with some goodies in the NCI's Kuula sandbox. She was good enough to answer my questions, and found the process to be fun and interesting.

Kuula buried under Megaprim

Megaprim buries many simsKuula and surrounding sims were buried under a giant plywood megaprim at 5am on 11 January. The size of the prim is uncertain, but it's believed to have covered 9 sims in total. No texture other than the default plywood texture was applied and the prim was set phantom, so it obstructed sight, rather than movement. However, any attempts to select it resulted in viewer crashes for the residents.

The prim appeared and disappeared from view, largely at random, unable to be seen from most vantage points, but still interfered with all object interactions and avatar-to-avatar object/money transfers. Spike Linden responded to calls through Help Request, and while he was not initially able to see the offending object, found a viewing angle where it became visible and was able to have the object removed.

Thanks to Beverly Montgomery for the information and the image.

Goo attack - Copycock II

Sorry, still no penis pictureReports are coming in now of another attack by the CopyCock, flying, self-replicating, explosive phallus. Shortly after 16:00 SLT, there were reports of the object swarming in sim Uzume, and Green Lantern Marious Bishop went out and confirmed the object, owned by CyberSexMakesMe Fapp was spreading throughout the region and into neighbouring sims.

Rowan Carroll called the details into Live Help (or whatever they call themselves these days), and went to New Citizens Inc, in nearby Kuula, locking down the parcel properties against object encroachment and alien scripts. Lucy Linden was quick to respond. By 17:00 SLT, several sims in the region of Uzume are downed during the cleanup.

If CyberSexMakesMe Fapp seems like a familiar name, that's because he was one of the two avatars involved in the attack on Luskwood late last night. This attack -- like the one last night -- does not seem to have been terribly widespread, suggesting that the attacker had specific targets in mind.

NCI expands funding model

Carl Metropolitan, in KuulaNew Citizens Incorporated (NCI) was founded in April 2005 by the outspoken Brace Coral and has had a solid history of teaching and assisting new residents in SL. The organization has established a strong reputation for the quality of it's facilities, the quality of it's event hosts and instructors, and the establishment of a 'safe space' for new residents to learn with minimal disruption.

NCI has always funded it's operations out of the donations of land, tier and money by it's operators and largely anonymous donations by generous residents. Particularly in 2006 under the stewardship of Carl Metropolitan, this has seen NCI grow from a minor player in the Second Life experience, to a large and noteworthy one.

Now, times are changing - NCI is expanding its funding model. I sat down with Carl Metropolitan, NCI's managing director, to find out more.
