This is the 18th in a series of interviews that are being conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.
I bumped into Footsy Furse at NCI South in Hamnida. She was willing to talk in detail about her early experiences and was able to articulate them clearly and distinctly.
This is the ninth in a series of interviews that are being conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. I caught up with Balut while I was down at the docks doing favors for sailors down at NCI Beach trawling for new folk to interview. Balut is primarily a designer/builder in Second Life, having come to Second Life with a background in animation and modelling. His pet peeve about building in Second Life is size limits for prims - not that he doesn't understand the necessity for it, but he would like to see the process streamlined somewhat. That said, he's pretty keen on sculpties. He would also like to see better building tools introduced - grid markings and alignment tools.
This is the eighth in a series of interviews that are being conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.
I met Simon through the main NCI members group IM channel. For a newcomer, he is quite with-it as regards his appearance, general movement and interaction with Second Life; his concerns focus more on the social and ethical concerns of age verification and the technological considerations of the sex industry in Second Life.
This is the seventh in a series of interviews that are being conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.
Rigrunner is another lad who volunteered to answer questions for me, having heard about the interviews over the NCI channel. His favorite place in Second Life is Devilfish Mall, in the Dahlia Sim. Rigrunner's favorite things to do in Second Life revolve around music and interactive builds.
There was great anticipation in the air as we awaited the arrival of our instructor. At last last, we too would be possessors of knowledge of the recent art of 'nano' and 'tortured' prims, our hands as eagerly at the ready over CTRL-3 as a mistress' over her whip and chains.
RoseLinUK London, the instructor, arrived at the top of the hour, and class commenced directly, with introductions and the distribution of class materials.
This is the third in a series of interviews that will be conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.
I met Roisin Hotaling as she was tinkering about with some goodies in the NCI's Kuula sandbox. She was good enough to answer my questions, and found the process to be fun and interesting.
This is the first in a series of largely demographic interviews that will be conducted with established residents, to find out more about them and their involvement with Second Life, and to contrast the differences between their views and experiences and those of the newer residents. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.
I ran into Muttenchops Chaplin whilst I was hanging around the New Citizen's plaza in Kuula, looking to swoop down upon new residents, grab them and train them as minions to serve in my glorious army and ask a few pertinent questions about Second Life. Finding that Muttenchops had been around for some time, I elected to ask him this set of questions instead.
New Citizens Incorporated's classroom in Disturbing World was host to the Starting a Business in Second Life class yesterday, taught by Nancy Villota.
If you have a desire to go into business in Second Life, especially if you are not familiar with the process of setting up a real life business, then you'll greatly benefit from attending this class.
Way back when, I kicked off classroom teaching at NCI, with a Basic Building class that ran every week for over a year. These days I'm out of the education loop at the NCI, but I really wanted to see how the classes are being handled, and I have an especial affinity for the Basic Building class.
With that in mind, I looked up a class that was on at a convenient time, and quietly slipped in to see how Kerhop Seattle handled his Basic Building class at NCI South yesterday.
It's a pretty old concept for most of us, harking back to the days of early childhood, when we would bring our favorite toy/parent/mishandled frog to the front of the class and make some pertinent remarks regarding them.
New Citizens Incorporated (NCI) has been running Show and Tell for new folk for ... well, just about as long as it's been around. Now, however, it's time for all those of us 91 days and older to polish up our skills and have a bash at "Oldbie Show and Tell"!
The launch party for NCI Beach is scheduled for 2pm-7pm SLT, on Saturday 17 March, and will be DJ'ed by NCI's own Zi Ree. Show your support for this charitable organization and join the party, maybe offer a small donation to help keep it all growing and running.
And if you see Brace Coral, for heaven's sake, don't let her get near any cheese!
They may not look like much, but these little prims, described as looking like they came from a prim wig, caused all sorts of hassle at NCI International, in Dream City tonight.
Yukiko Omegamu, administrator of NCI International found the prims in the NCI area. It was quickly established that anyone who attempted to select the prims got their viewer immediately crashed. Several new residents suffered this fate.

Kuula and surrounding sims were buried under a giant plywood megaprim at 5am on 11 January. The size of the prim is uncertain, but it's believed to have covered 9 sims in total. No texture other than the default plywood texture was applied and the prim was set phantom, so it obstructed sight, rather than movement. However, any attempts to select it resulted in viewer crashes for the residents.
The prim appeared and disappeared from view, largely at random, unable to be seen from most vantage points, but still interfered with all object interactions and avatar-to-avatar object/money transfers. Spike Linden responded to calls through Help Request, and while he was not initially able to see the offending object, found a viewing angle where it became visible and was able to have the object removed.
Thanks to Beverly Montgomery for the information and the image.
Reports are coming in now of another attack by the CopyCock, flying, self-replicating, explosive phallus. Shortly after 16:00 SLT, there were reports of the object swarming in sim Uzume, and Green Lantern Marious Bishop went out and confirmed the object, owned by CyberSexMakesMe Fapp was spreading throughout the region and into neighbouring sims.
Rowan Carroll called the details into Live Help (or whatever they call themselves these days), and went to New Citizens Inc, in nearby Kuula, locking down the parcel properties against object encroachment and alien scripts. Lucy Linden was quick to respond. By 17:00 SLT, several sims in the region of Uzume are downed during the cleanup.
If CyberSexMakesMe Fapp seems like a familiar name, that's because he was one of the two avatars involved in the attack on Luskwood late last night. This attack -- like the one last night -- does not seem to have been terribly widespread, suggesting that the attacker had specific targets in mind.
New Citizens Incorporated (NCI) was founded in April 2005 by the outspoken Brace Coral and has had a solid history of teaching and assisting new residents in SL. The organization has established a strong reputation for the quality of it's facilities, the quality of it's event hosts and instructors, and the establishment of a 'safe space' for new residents to learn with minimal disruption.
NCI has always funded it's operations out of the donations of land, tier and money by it's operators and largely anonymous donations by generous residents. Particularly in 2006 under the stewardship of Carl Metropolitan, this has seen NCI grow from a minor player in the Second Life experience, to a large and noteworthy one.
Now, times are changing - NCI is expanding its funding model. I sat down with Carl Metropolitan, NCI's managing director, to find out more.
