On Advertising

Doppelganger Studios, creators of The Music Lounge, have come to the conclusion that simulating RL environments from cities such as New York, Paris, and Tokyo might be the key to introduce advertising to its teen audience. The reasoning appears to be that teens are used to seeing advertising in RL, so seeing it in a virtual world that closely resembles RL will make advertising more palatable.

The article goes on to talk about SL, noting its 'haphazard patchwork of individual plots'. Presumably, lack of consistent urban planning is a detriment to effective advertising. Those of you who own your own sims or parcels: Would you put up a billboard advertising a RL brand if given enough money? Is such a model an inevitability? How long will SL remain blissfully ad-free?

Machinima Guru is now on the Teen Grid!

I'm so excited to share with everyone that my alt, Machinima Guru, is now on the Teen Grid! I met Barry Joseph, of Global Kids, at the Machinima Festival in New York in November of 2006. While there, I expressed that I'd like to work with the teens to educate them about Machinima. The approval process started back in January and I was cleared for entrance around mid-February. After a period of preparation where I gathered as many supplies as I could from the Main Grid, I requested entrance in mid-March. After some delays, I discovered that I could finally log in!

I arrived during a live stream of a Youth Conference, so there were a number of teens on Global Kids island. It was almost a surreal experience as I could not build, didn't know where anything was, and was afraid to do anything for fear of offending others. After the initial shock wore off, I had the chance to speak with some of the teens and let them sound off about the issues with their grid. I'll be blogging about my experiences here, as well as giving the teens a voice on Second Life Insider. If there's anything that you're dying to know, leave a comment!

72 Hours in SL and RL

Millions of Us, a metaverse media management company, is involved in an interesting event occurring as we speak, and for the next 72 hours. Versu Richelieu will be spending 3 days in the store window of Datavision, an electronics superstore in New York, with only her laptop as a source for entertainment, communication, and nourishment. She won't be eating her computer, though she will be using it to order food and anything else she might need online.

Additionally, she'll be spending her 72 hours in SL, in an attempt to build an equivalent model of the surrounding blocks in which she's ensconced. The best part? You can see what she's doing in both worlds at http://www.nyclivewindow.com/!

When I arrived at the sim in which she was building, I was amazed to see a metric tonne of Lindens there: Sabin, Ben, MichaelFrancis, Jeska, Milo, Torley were all in attendance, watching Versu build while she danced. Versu, I wish you luck. Keep hydrated and make us proud, soldier!
