Make a Big Splash with Splashcast

I had the chance to meet Marshall Kirkpatrick, of Splashcast, back in March at SXSW. We had a long talk about the service that they offer and how it could possibly help Second Lifers. Hamlet Au, of New World Notes, actually created a Second Life Machinima channel back in January that was featured on the site. I see a lot of potential here as a way to show off our work without taking up a lot of space.

What is Splashcast? It's a different way to share media. You can display pictures from Flickr, audio, and even videos from YouTube. You can also upload your own media. It is then turned into a slideshow of sorts that you can widely distribute with the click of a button.

I've been meaning to re-upload the old Grid Review Machinimas that I made ages ago, so this was the perfect opportunity. After a grueling four hour upload process to YouTube, I was able to load all of the links into Splashcast to make a show. Now I'm able to bring them to you in all of their glory! Have you made a show or channel? Share the link in a comment!

A Possible Breakthrough: Merging Geometry?

Second Life Insider reader Funk Schnook sent me an in-world tip regarding Qarl's blog. As previously discovered by Moriash Moreau, the URL corners changed to qarners and then to qarl on Cubesque. Now it appears as if Qarl Linden is the person behind the event which we have not determined the nature of yet.

We now have solid theories, thanks to Funk. On September 15th, 2006 at 4:46pm, Qarl blogged about merging geometry in Maya. This would make seams between two parts smooth. This entry is not visible on his blog. The entry DID end up being cached in his RSS feed, which allowed pictures to be taken of this entry. Click here and here to see the step by step instructions he gave.

With no recent updates to the CubeOverload site, and the Cubesque site rapidly filling with blocks, only time will answer our burning question. See you at 9:46am PDT/SLT!

Machinima Guru is now on the Teen Grid!

I'm so excited to share with everyone that my alt, Machinima Guru, is now on the Teen Grid! I met Barry Joseph, of Global Kids, at the Machinima Festival in New York in November of 2006. While there, I expressed that I'd like to work with the teens to educate them about Machinima. The approval process started back in January and I was cleared for entrance around mid-February. After a period of preparation where I gathered as many supplies as I could from the Main Grid, I requested entrance in mid-March. After some delays, I discovered that I could finally log in!

I arrived during a live stream of a Youth Conference, so there were a number of teens on Global Kids island. It was almost a surreal experience as I could not build, didn't know where anything was, and was afraid to do anything for fear of offending others. After the initial shock wore off, I had the chance to speak with some of the teens and let them sound off about the issues with their grid. I'll be blogging about my experiences here, as well as giving the teens a voice on Second Life Insider. If there's anything that you're dying to know, leave a comment!

Akela Talamasca does Intellacast!

No, not in the adult sense. Our very own Lead Blogger, Akela Talamasca, appeared on Intellacast earlier today. They discussed topics such as avatar appearance, why he chooses to be a wolfie, voice chat in SL, and blogging for SLI! I even learned a few things about him. For example, I pronounce his name totally wrong!

What is Intellacast? It's a regular blog and podcast written and edited by Intellagirl Tully. She is currently using Second Life as a research and education tool.

I found the podcast very interesting. The best quote taken out of context from the session came from Akela. "It's got mad pecs, yo!"

Machinima Guru about to head to Teen Grid

When I started blogging for Second Life Insider earlier this month, I mentioned that I was hoping to bridge the gap between the Main Grid and the Teen Grid. At that time, I had submitted my application for a background check and was anxiously awaiting the results. They came back and I received a clean bill of health. In other words, I'm not a felon!

The time has come for my alt, Machinima Guru, to head on over to the Teen Grid. I've learned quite a bit about what you can't do over there. For example, you can't give or receive inventory, or teleport freely around the grid. I'll be relegated to GK Machinima Island, where I'll be working with the teens on Machinima.

In preparation for my move, I've raided moo's inventory for some cute, yet conservative clothing, headed over to ETD for some newbie friendly hair, purchased eyes and eyelashes from Sin Skins, and chose a nice light, freckled Fevrier skin from Tete a Pied. I also grabbed a MystiTool, which I absolutely can't live without, and a tiny cow avatar from Wynx Whiplash. See, one other thing I learned is that I can't shop over there. I'm a major shopaholic, so the idea of not being able to support their economy devastates me.

Soon, I'll be bringing my stories of life on the Teen Grid to Second Life Insider. I'll also have the chance to chat with the teens in their native environment and find out their opinion on things. I hope that you'll enjoy these experiences as much as I will!

Fox Atomic Machinima Contest Ends on 02/26!

Millions of Us and Fox Atomic are running a killer contest ... literally. The object is to grab one of the free avatars available on their island and make a film! The contest is being held to promote Fox Atomic's latest movies, 28 Days Later, The Hills Have Eyes 2, and The Comebacks. Kiwi Alfa has been holding basic Machinima classes, but they recently ended. Now it's up to you to submit your best work to the Fox Atomic website. You can also find the official rules and other entries there.

The prizes are some of the highest value I've seen for a Machinima contest. One grand prize winner will receive a trip for two to Costa Rica. The first and second prize winners will receive 100,000L and 50,000L. Not a bad haul for virtual loot. The contest ends on Monday, February 26th, at 11:59PM PST, so don't wait!

Pretty in Punk

It all started with the dress. The Satin Ribbon Cocktail little black dress by Boing Fromage called to me from the forum ad. I couldn't just wear it by itself, though. I needed some serious accessories!

My first thought was shoes. Didn't I see some nice ones at Shiny Things? Ah yes, the Flare Oxfords. Ooh, and freebie nubby socks, too! My legs looked so bare that I paired them with some fishnets from Preen. Then, of course, my arms looked bare. Pushbutton Skolnick's new Sailor Jerry Tats in Fresh took care of that problem.

I knew I had to have the Fierce hair by Gurl 6. The pink dipped black had just the edge that I needed. It's as girly as you can get for a hardcore mohawk. As for the skin, I am such a Tete a Pied addict. I think the fashionistas will really like the new Fevrier four pack that will be out next week, with it's cat eyes and bold colors, shown here in Sky.

Total fashion bliss has been achieved. What do you think?
