Tough questions - snatching at credibility

For those of you living under a rock as far as Second Life news is concerned, there's a new media firestorm about Second Life: Resident numbers. The smoking gun starts a grass fire as journalists scramble to acquire credibility by jumping onto the bandwagon of questioning numbers. Everyone loves a good scandal.

This begs the real question, though. The media circus is obfuscating a more important issue with the numbers.

The Value of One

Clay Shirky (left) and Wagner James Au (right)The debate rages. Clay Shirky, Wagner James Au and others going backwards and forwards about what all the numbers mean. Signups, active residents, paying accounts, free accounts, verified accounts, unverified accounts and alts.

Two Million Signups

2 million on 14 december, somewhere between 10 and 11pm GMTThe Second Life login screen and XML statistics blobs are reporting that Second Life has passed it's two millionth signup. The figures normally only update at midnight, but someone manually updated them within the last 90 minutes or so.

For people who care more about residents than signup numbers, we're probably talking about 200,000-300,000 actual residents - but the figures that are required to make that determination remain unpublished. And -- frankly -- business and media aren't really going to care. They themselves use numbers that are similarly optimistic (units shipped, rather than units sold, for example).

Either way, we're still talking about a lot of people. It's always busy out there. Except for updates, concurrency remains over 7,500 now, peaking over 18,000. Unless something goes drastically wrong, it isn't going to get less busy than this.
