Bad day in SL

According to reports I'm receiving, and my own experience, SL is having a bad hair day, at least at the moment:
  • Teleports are optional,
  • Search won't,
  • Friends lists are optional,
  • Money is Loading....,
  • Changing clothes is a luxury,
  • Europeans are reporting packet loss at high levels too

Be braced for a bumpy ride people.

SL slows to a grind.

I've been teleporting around all evening on a window-shopping spree. Suddenly one of my group IMs buzzed to life with "Is it only me or can no one teleport?" Over the next few minutes we've had no ability to build, search is borked (nothing shows up even if you search for sex with mature checked, it must be bad!) and people that are relying on the dataserver for reading notecards and customer information are finding that's not working either.

No word from the official blog as yet, but your second life may be rather adversely affected. I may not see the resolution of this one, it's getting kind of late for me.

[UPDATE] Official blog catches up, adds shopping, loading money and rezzing no copy items to list of things with problems.

[UPDATE] According to the main blog this has been fixed. I've not yet been back in world to check, but we had a rough two hours looking at the time it was declared fixed.

Regions down spreading?

Comments in IMs, and now my personal experience suggest that the 1,200 sims down already reported is spreading... I received an IM saying "My coastal sim is now an island, maybe I should sell!" shortly before a crash that is bearing all the hall marks of a sim going down.

I guess we're looking at something nasty, possibly in the new code that was rolled out earlier today?

Presence rears its ugly head again

Perhaps it's just me - I'm paranoid, or special - but it seems like it's affecting lots of people, certainly several I can talk to.

I'm logged in at the moment, not that you'd know it. The amount of emails I'm getting saying "X sent you an IM" or "Y has offered you inventory" beggars belief. My own presence list is also borked, people showing as online that aren't, or as offline that I'm talking to, face to face.

There's no official word on this, and yes, I've bug reported it, so, beware - your friends might be there, just SL is lying to you. Again.

Blog updated with known issues

Bugs!Linden Lab have updated the list of known issues on the Linden Blog. There are five issues listed there.

  1. Crash bug on login (relating to the use of VBOs)
  2. Map display problems.
  3. Recompile scripts in selection not functioning.
  4. Problems with the build UI.
  5. Buy Pass not working properly.

Just Askin': What bug bugs you most?

Bugs are everywhere. Where do they come from? What do they want from us?Second Life isn't just a complicated piece of software. It's more like a couple dozen complicated pieces of software (perhaps more) and we all know that any given piece of software always has bugs. [Famous operating system] reportedly still has thousands of them, that are either too difficult to reproduce, or to expensive to hunt for.

If you had to pick one Second Life bug -- only one -- that really, really gets to you, what would it be? It may not be a big one, it might be something that seems tiny and trivial that happens over and over.

by Tateru NinoName that bug!

Places takes a holiday

Search placesSearch > Places is obviously very tired and overworked. Linden Lab has graciously given it the weekend off, promising to put it back to work next week. In the meantime, it's off to places ... err, unknowable, or at least not findable in Search.

This is expected to be a fantastically popular move, and I'm sure all the residents and businesses of Second Life will be happy to see this function get a well deserved rest.

The announcement tantalizingly suggests 'If not sooner', but based on the last couple days... well....what do you think? Will we be seeing this function back before Monday? Tuesday? Will the dev/grid teams sort it out over the weekend?

Tateru NinoWhen do you expect to see this function back? How much does it bother you (if at all) not having it? How much does it bother you not being sure when it will be functioning again?

1.13 - Day two

We're now rolling into the afternoon of the day after the 1.13 update. Drama continues.
  • Still teleportation failures and issues with the presence mesh (the presence mesh is the system that allows you to map others, send IMs and group invitations to them, and provides online/offline status messages). Teleportation is reported mostly working, however.
  • Some regions are down when showing as up -- or apparently up when they're showing as down.
  • Occasional failed money transfers.
  • Search is offline, they say. Well -- some of it. Okay, most of it. Classifieds are out (I wonder what the refund/rebate scheme for those is), Events, Popular Places, Land Sales, Places and Groups. That leaves All and People -- Since People is the only working search tab other than All, that basically just means People.
  • Buying land is offline. This is expected to last into tomorrow due to 'parcel queries' being disabled. It's not yet clear as to whether this means that all that stuff in search will be out for the same length of time or not.
  • The herald reports (language warning) that at least one sim got wiped either during or in the immediate aftermath of the update, and that concierge isn't taking calls. I've been told that large pieces of at least one other corporate sim apparently vanished at about the same time.
  • If you'd like to marry or divorce within Second Life -- please keep your pants on. The partnering page is apparently non-functional. And wouldn't you know it? If you're trying to find a bar to drown your sorrows, you can't, because search is down.
TateruOf course Linden Lab are hammering away at this. I don't expect them to much stop before they've got it all sorted, but there's not a lot of joy to be had in the meantime. How long do you think it will take? Do you think Linden Lab is doing a mighty fine job under the circumstances, or would you set the ice-weasels on them?

[Update (5pm SLT): You can now partner up or get your divorce processed. You still can't find a bar to drown your sorrows or celebrate in however.]

Post-update woes

In the wake of today's update to version 1.13.0 (8), we've had either the expected woes -- or more than the expected woes, depending on your perspective. The new friends-list functions seem to be working quite well, as are the chat and IM logging enhancements, but now -- some ten hours past the scheduled update window -- there are still issues.

  • Teleportation is an iffy proposition, depending on where you are, where you want to go and when you want to do it. It either works or it doesn't, and many are reporting spurious access denied messages for normally open destinations.
  • Linden Dollar balances display -- or don't. It's a bit of a mood thing, apparently, though it now seems to be working more often than it isn't.
  • Search - Search is up and down (as they say) 'like the Assyrian Empire'. Now it works, now it doesn't. If you're trying to get a name into an abuse report, you may be just plain out of luck for an hour or more.
  • Profiles are slow, slow, quick-quick, slow. Or just not appearing.
  • Some rezzed objects are not appearing for many minutes -- or over an hour in some cases.
  • Actually using the new friends functions may not work - no response for some time, or at all in some cases -- this appears to be linked to the same up and down cycle of search and profiles. Database clusters are obviously having a cow (or other indictable farm animal)
  • Sims falling in a heap and not restarting themselves. An overworked gridmonkey is apparently dealing with them as swiftly as possible -- Send more bananas.
So, tell me. Is this as bad as you expected for this release? Better? Or worse?

Bugged

Well ... it is generally asserted that 1.12 is a success, in terms of an update that didn't break a whole load of new stuff. Fair enough. In my terms, however, it isn't a success, because I am still being bugged by the same old building bugs that have been driving me crazy for months and months. Plus I have a new lag problem which is affecting other people too. It's making building a pain, difficult, not enjoyable at all..

The "link failed, pieces too far apart" bug is still alive and well. This refuses to link an object even if the object is well within the maximum size available. In some cases I have had this message with hair and small objects, or with an object in the middle of an already linked object.

The "can't stretch inidividual prim of linked object even when you check edit linked parts" bug is alive and well. This means that if you try to stretch an individual prim in a linked object, it stretches but immediately springs back to its original size, until you unlink it.

The bug ... well I presume it is a bug ... which means that if you select a couple of prims from a linked object and delink them, the whole object, both unlinked and linked parts become selected, is still with us. This has meant recently that I inadvertently retextured a whole build because I hadn't realised the whole object was selected.

The bug which means that you can select three prims together, try to rotate them as one object and find that they are all rotating separately, but at the same time, is still around. Annoyingly, if you try to revert back by reversing the procedure, they will invariably then act the way that they should, as one object.

In addition, I am getting a delay between clicking on a texture window and seeing the texture picker open. It's only a couple of seconds, but when you are trying to retexture a complex object it makes everything so sloooow.

Oh, and I crash when I try to sort inventory or delete anything from inventory.

Fenrir reports on the forums problems with building in an empty sim with no connection problems, and I have the same problem. I had a discussion with one other avatar in an empty sim and was getting a 10-15 second delay on chat appearing.

I don't know what's up, but it is making trying to build for the project I am building for very frustrating indeed.

Warning: vanishing inventory!

I posted a list of bugs and issues reported following the 1.11.2 update a short while ago, but this bug is potentially so costly for people that I thought I should make a separate entry for it.

Something has been a bit odd about auto-return since the 1.11 update, because people who own the land have been finding that if they build their prims are returned to them, in a seemingly random way.

Even on land with no auto return, people have reported odd things disappearing or being returned to them, although I hadn't experienced that until this morning. Oclee is building a set for publicity photographs of his fireplace, and needed a chair to put in the corner, of the right shape and elegance to go with a renaissance-style fireplace.

I dragged my Relic inventory box, by Toneless Tomba, from my inventory to the ground. The notecard that is delivered whenever it is rezzed was delivered to me, but the box never appeared. It has gone from my inventory and isn't in my lost and found or my trash. It has vanished off the face of my inventory and the world. It contains a lot of stuff that has sentimental value, things I have been given and have bought, and don't currently have out in my house.

I even removed the surface patch in case I had accidentally buried it. I haven't.

My advice is, don't rezz anything expensive, or any storage device for things you don't have copies of, really, don't rezz anything that isn't copyable, until they have fixed this. As people are reporting that vendors and buying are not delivering goods to them, maybe it would be sensible not to buy anything too expensive either?

Update: arrived about 20 minutes later, about 100 metres from where I rezzed it. Weird.

More workaround and bug links

The click-through flashing pie menu bug, which means you immediately find yourself on the second layer, plus workaround, discussed here.

The leave edit, wear, crash bug, discussed here. The workaround? Don't do it, folks!

Residual chat message bug (where text turns up white instead of varied colours) is discussed here.

The lag-delay problem, which I have and is driving me NUTS, is discussed here. Although there are only three people on the thread including me, I have talked to a lot of people in world who have this problem too.

Alt/left/right clicking bug and workaround is outlined here with a workaround.

The page explaining SL's known issues page is here, with definition and a key for the symbols used, plus a link to the bug reporting 101.

The known issues list is here. It needs careful reading as we have 1.11.1, which is the current version, 1.11.2, which is the update in preview, and 1.12 which is also in preview.

Some useful notes from the forum for 1.11.1 update

I think the most useful thing I can do at this point is to list the problems people are reporting and links to forum discussions about them. I know for myself that one of the most frustrating things in SL is to experience problems with an update and not to know if you are alone or among dozens of other players with the same problem. People sometimes have workarounds too.

I encourage everyone to post bug reports on the things that are happening. It helps to give a lot of details and include if possible whether you are experiencing packet loss. You can get that information by mousing over the two bars in the top right hand corner of your screen, or by clicking on "About Second Life" in the help menu.

Problem with posting snapshots to FLickr mentioned here.

Be warned that if you have auto-return set on a parcel, and then build new objects on that parcel, they may start returning. Workaround: switch off auto-return. The explanation may lie with this post, as the system is obviously not recognizing the owner of the object.

This is just driving me crazy ....

Once upon a time, my map worked fine, and then they borked it ...I love SL. I really, really do. It is a source of income, a source of friendship and support, a place to meet new people, to talk, to do interesting things. I have learned a lot about myself, about building, about people since I joined. I was searching for community when I moved from Uru to SL, but I found soo much more, and I care about it. I know I'm not alone.

So, the current unrest is driving me crazy. It stems from a number of things, I would say. There have been a lot of building bugs which haven't been fixed for a couple of updates. The one which was most frustrating before last Wednesday's update was a texturing bug which meant that if you selected an object and applied a texture, the texture would take on all but a couple of surfaces. Even if you textured and retextured, there were always multiple textures on the object.

Some people had residual problems with the 1.10 update, but the 1.11 update seems to have broken a lot of things, or changed them. One of the most infuriating things is not knowing whether something has been broken deliberately or not, because a change isn't documented. Like the temp-on-rez change I blogged about a couple of days ago. For people like Starax, whose best-selling wand depends on temp-on-rez behaving as it did, that sort of thing is very annoying. Not documenting it means that people who haven't read this blog or Starax's comments on the SL forum, are still trying desperately to work out what on earth has happened, like The Sojourner at Dreams, who posted a puzzled query on the Second Life Answers forum.
