KODE Gallery Opening/Charity Event in Envy

The new commercial sim, Envy, previously blogged about here, is hosting a cool new event this Friday at 4 PM SLT: [KODE] Gallery's Haemetz Mizser Exhibit, across from Marlys. Haemetz (Lois Lancaster in RL; roncevaux on Fotolog) is a digital painter in the Expressionist mode, though he's developed his own style.

The gallery opening will be held for charity; the artist has graciously deferred all proceeds, and Kode Forager, gallery owner, has selected the Free Arts for Abused Children Program to benefit. This looks to be a fun event, now it just needs you to make it work!

Mardi Gras Coming to the Big Easy on 02/19

Two years ago, when New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, Second Life residents banded together to create the Big Easy and Biloxi sims. They raised a generous sum of money to donate toward recovery efforts and since then, the sims have been mostly dormant. Save for the occasional wedding, whose proceeds go to the Relief effort, this is the first large-scale event to take place in a while.

What event am I referring to? Mardi Gras! The festivities begin at 10AM and 6PM PST. Put on your craziest outfit and head to the Biloxi and Big Easy sims for floats, beads, live entertainment, martinis, and more. Proceeds from the event will benefit Habitat for Humanity - New Orleans. You won't believe the activities they have planned...

Save the Children sells Virtual Yaks

Milk a yak for the children. No, seriously!

Save the Children with the help of Aimee Weber Studio has started a fun new project in Second Life affectionately called The Yak Shack! This may seem completely random but in reality, yaks can be a lifesaver for children in Tibet. They provide nutritious milk, wool for knitting and are also used for ploughing.

Elf Circle Holiday Charity Week

[UPDATE: SLurl has been added!] The Elf Circle invites everyone to come visit their lands in Mystica and ElvenMoor from December 7th to the 15th for their Holiday Charity Week, with proceeds from the fundraiser to benefit charities such as American Red Cross, Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity, and Doctors without Borders.

The list of events is extensive and varied, featuring such highlights as a synchronized swim and dance by merfolk, live music concerts, and storytelling. This week-long event promises something for everyone, so I urge you all to attend; it's for good causes! Keep an eye here for the list of scheduled events.

As a side note, I apologize for the lack of SLurls, but since the Places tab is currently down, I can't generate them for you. If anyone from the Elf Circle, Isle of Wyrms, or related participating groups is reading this, please send me some in-world coordinates, and I'll include them in this post.

(Thanks, Legolas!)

More Virtual Charity

The infamous Joshua Nightshade recently announced on Second Citizen that he is using his powers for good rather than evil. Long story short, he will be donating 100% of his sales from Abstract from October 31st to November 23rd to the AIDS Research Alliance and Marine Toys for Tots. He will also be donating double the proceeds for select items.

One interesting touch is that Joshua will not write this donation off on his taxes. Joshua states, "So I won't make any profit nor benefit off of this whatsoever." Of course this sacrifice doesn't help the aforementioned charitable funds in any way. But given the sometimes bitter and suspicious nature of the Second Life social fabric, philanthropy actually requires proactive damage control!!

Ooooh, what a telling quote about SLers. Let's say it again...Second Life philanthropy actually requires proactive damage control.

Anyways, best of luck in this wonderful effort, Joshua.

United Nations Use Second Life to Fight Poverty

On October 15-16, The United Nations with the help of Aimee Weber Studio will be taking the global war on poverty to an unprecedented front ... the virtual world. Second Life residents will be able to Stand Up and be counted as supporter of the Millennium Development Goals and help abolish extreme poverty around the world.

It all started on September 2000 at the United Nations Millennium Summit when almost every country in the world agreed to complete eight time-bound goals that would eradicate extreme poverty across the planet. In October 2002, the Millennium Campaign was launched to hold those nations accountable for their commitments.

The premise is simple: "We are the first generation that can put an end to extreme poverty around the world, and we refuse to miss this opportunity!"
