Working cultures in Second Life

The other day I was in a class, and in the wrap up at the end I was asked to say what I thought the differences between working for an educational institution and a commercial one were in SL. It's a situation I'm fairly well positioned on, I've worked with a range of both types of organisations. One group I haven't worked with is the "city council" or similar who try to sell their city and build it anew.

I came up, at short notice with a few differences. I've had a think and refined them a bit, and thought I'd share them and ask for your input and thoughts. You never know, it might be a good tool for one group or the other to learn (I'd suggest commercial to learn from educational - education seems to be booming in SL, although there are some corporate good practise elements from the commercial end too).

  1. Build type:
    • Educators are more likely (say 50%+) to eschew a "corporate build" - the administration office block or similar. Of those that do have such a thing a high proportion are likely to subvert it somehow elsewhere in their build.
    • Corporate types are much more likely to go for "the office block" - I'd say 95%. They clearly identify their office as their corporation.
  2. Build nature
    • Educators tend to focus on the results. That's both in terms of meeting the educational needs, and being relatively happy if nothing happens, nothing happens, then a finished build appears.
    • Corporate types tend to want regular reports, plans, milestones etc.
So, they're my thoughts. What do you think? Just Askin'

This Will Make You Lose Your Butt

I love our readers. The scintillatingly scintillating Iris Ophelia sends in this link to a commercial for smallstep.gov, a site devoted to helping people lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Besides being funny and cute, the creators of this spot clearly know their SL. Witness the typing animation, the row of purple buttons, and (subtle!) the fact that the unicorn does the typing, not the guy on his back. Watch it now!

"You do all the talking,"

Microsoft has already asked us to defy all challenges in Second Life, but now they're asking us to defy all advertisers? Geert Desager, a Marketing Manager for Microsoft, commissioned this commercial, The Break Up, to show the relationship between most advertisers and their consumers. While it was intended to reflect real life situations, it certainly rings true in Second Life.

In the commercial, the consumer wants a divorce, while the advertiser sees nothing wrong with their relationship. She, the consumer, feels that he, the advertiser, isn't being genuine when he says he loves her. They don't talk anymore, he does all the talking, and he even tries to buy her love. He claims to know everything about her, and then goes into describing her target demographic, not the consumer herself. In the end, she walks off frustrated while he offers the incentive of a tiny, minuscule chance to win a vacation.

Does this sound like any real life companies that came to Second Life? How many of them showed up to much fanfare only to never be heard from again? How does this commercial make YOU feel? Leave a comment!

Two and a Half Virtual Men

Okay, Akela is out of hibernation and catching up with Tateru's unbelievable post run! Thanks for waiting, Internet! Although, having said that, I'll probably suddenly hit writer's block tomorrow. Regardless, this came to my attention from a bunch of separate residents, so thanks everyone!

The CBS network show 'Two and a Half Men' has developed a commercial using SL graphics. Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen look pretty good as avatars! Whether that says something positive or negative about them as humans is beyond the scope of this post. However, it's a slickly produced spot, and worth viewing, though it's notable that in the commercial Cryer says 'the virtual world', rather than 'Second Life'.
