CSI brings tide not torrent

Assuming CSI:NY had not aired their program featuring Second Life on Wednesday this week, projected signups for Wednesday and Thursday were expected to total 47,434. Actual signups for Wednesday and Thursday this week exceeded that projection by 74,412 signups, with 122,846 new registrations taking place in that 48 hour period.

The incident was marred, however, by the failure of the webservers for the CSI event, preventing many from registering via the CSI registration portal or downloading the OnRez viewer, both provided by the Electric Sheep Company.

CSI:NY airs episode featuring Second Life - impressions

Popular CBS crime-based science-fiction series, CSI:NY aired last night across North America, featuring Second Life as a major feature of a two-part story, the second part of which is due to air in February 2008.

I hate spoilers, so we'll skip talking about the story. Second Life, as it is portrayed, is given a pretty reasonable treatment - the skepticism of many of the core characters is not unusual - however, this is not the Second Life you know, just as CSI is not the forensics department you'll find if you go downtown.

Short notice voice maintenance early tomorrow morning

Linden Lab and Vivox are taking the voice system down for maintenance tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 24 October) between 2AM and 3AM SLT (US Pacific) for unspecified improvements.

Could this have anything to do with the projected influx of CSI:NY fans tomorrow? It would be too coincidental to suggest otherwise. Apparently Linden Lab has been robustifying a number of subsystems, particularly the user-registration system.

CSI: NY Goodness Just Keeps Comin'

Reader Elle Pollack continues to bring The Real. First, yet another new commercial, this one featuring a little more info on the plot of the show, and some added footage. It's got a cute, maniacal tiny with a gun! And it keeps Mac's awesome 'Log out! NOW!'

Secondly, video from CSI creator Anthony Zuiker about the origin of the SL episode. He talks about the various mini games and continuing content coming up, all of which sound great! He's certainly excited about it, which makes me happy to see. To watch the video at the link, enter the code 'daz07'.

Some incidental information: Did you know the Sheep got bought by CBS? We'd reported that CBS invested in a round of financing in the Sheep to the tune of $7 million, but actually bought? Would anyone like to confirm/deny this? Also, a great quote from the video: " ... you're literally in a virtual New York City." Literally virtual; this guy IS a writer!

(Thanks, Elle!)

Crazy New CSI:NY Commercial

Oooookay. When I posted about this the last time, I was more than cautiously optimistic that maybe someone in the mainstream media would take SL seriously enough to do more than provide a backdrop of seedy sex and perversion. And this newest commercial for the upcoming episode of CSI: NY does still keep some of that feeling, but then in the latter half, turns it on its head.

Character creation has never been faster, according to this commercial. You can apparently do it all from the keyboard, too, from the sound of it. Whatever; that's all well and good. It's when they get to the gladiator arena that I begin to worry. "He's serious, Mac." Then, a shot of the SL expert character using some sort of gamepad, or input device to wage combat? Then a decapitation, Mac shouting "Log off! Now!", and the sound of my suspension of disbelief being smashed with a hammer. Well, at least it's different.

ESC launch sanctioned new viewer to tie in with CSI:NY in SL

We already knew that, if you live in the USA or Canada, or surf the internet desperately, 24th October (a fortnight today) will see SL feature in CSI:NY.

What has just come to light is that ESC will be launching a new, commercially licensed, viewer for SL at the same time. Details are currently rather sketchy, but there will be an option to sign up from the CSI:NY site, and it will be available to residents. The interface will, according to the press release, more closely resemble a browser than the current client (one has to ask which browser, Sidebars? Customisable folders on a book marks bar? Widgets?) which is probably a good thing, because the current viewer is not the most elegant piece of UI design. To quote: It also combines Second Life features, such as teleporting, with sophisticated OnRez services for virtual shopping and searching. Perhaps less desirable in the general run of things to most residents?

Update: The viewer will apparently be available from here.
