Anthropology and SL: Two Great Tastes, etc.

I'm excited to read Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human by Tom Boellstorff, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of California at Irvine, perhaps better known as his SL avatar Tom Bukowski.

One mode of thought has it that humans stopped evolving once they began to manipulate their environment to make their lives easier; there's nothing like the threat of extinction to force evolution. However, while our physical evolution might have slowed or even halted, our social evolution continues, as witness the rise of the online social networking phenomenon exemplified by MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and of course SL.

If I hadn't been such a poor student, I'd have gone into anthropology myself, so I'm eager to read Mr. Boellstorff's upcoming book, in which he relates his experiences being in-world for over two and a half years.

Creating Worlds That Work

This article should be a must-read for anyone who doubts the power of SL to inform and educate and make more whole the lives of its residents. It concerns itself mainly with the recent Games For Change event, held by the Serious Games Initiative. Among other things, the article mentions Ted Castronova, Global Kids, and an excerpt from a speech by Philip.

However, the main thrust of the piece is that it's vital to keep alive one's sense of childlike wonder, of questioning everything -- it's this sense that leads to flexible thinking, which is one of the key features of a fully evolved mind. The ability to adapt to the ever-changing world is extraordinarily important, and one way in which SL helps foster that ability is in its allowing its residents to change their entire reality.

Read this article and let it open doors for you.

Who You Gonna Call?

Trinity Nabob has created a fun area in the Evolution sim, just in time for the approach of Hallowe'en. From the air, it seems fairly quiet and ordinary, until one notices the dense patches of fog wafting around the grassy floor of a nearby forest. One you drop in, the true nature of the place becomes obvious: you're in a graveyard!

I'm not sure whether Trinity has more planned, as All Hallows Eve is still a few weeks away, but it looks great right now. Go check it out, and drop in a donation. Show how much you scare!

I'm sorry, I don't know why I did that.

(Thanks, Andrew!)
