Virtual 3D Marketing

It seems the business model of having a virtual space in which to hold business meetings and engage customers at all hours is starting to catch on, as witness the emergence of a new company called Virtual 3D Marketing -- an ironically-horrible name, given that for a marketing company it's really bland and bare-bones. Kind of like brushing your teeth with Tooth Cleaning Toothpaste, or choosing to drive around town in your new Automobile Car.

At any rate, what this company does is provides its customers with, according to the article: " ... interactive exhibit areas and 3-D products on display, online automation, and tech sessions and workshops using live, pre-recorded or archived learning tools." This describes SL pretty well, and Our Intellagirl even makes an appearance in the article saying words to that effect. She even goes farther, saying that without certain technologies, such as customization, services like these won't be able to compete. What do you all think? Is there room for business competition?

Second Life For Dummies

SL's own Intellagirl Tully (along with her partner Mark Bell) is hard at work on 'Second Life for Dummies', the latest in the 'For Dummies' canon of publications. Chafe at the appellation if you must, but these books are as popular as they've ever been -- apparently people don't mind being called 'dummies', as long as they're learning something. That's hard to argue against, so we'll let it lie. The book is due in September.

The article mentions that Intellagirl is asking residents for their recommendations on the 10 best places in SL. Go visit her blog and let her know what you think!

Akela Talamasca does Intellacast!

No, not in the adult sense. Our very own Lead Blogger, Akela Talamasca, appeared on Intellacast earlier today. They discussed topics such as avatar appearance, why he chooses to be a wolfie, voice chat in SL, and blogging for SLI! I even learned a few things about him. For example, I pronounce his name totally wrong!

What is Intellacast? It's a regular blog and podcast written and edited by Intellagirl Tully. She is currently using Second Life as a research and education tool.

I found the podcast very interesting. The best quote taken out of context from the session came from Akela. "It's got mad pecs, yo!"

Intellagirl Tully: SL Professor

Intellagirl Tully is taking a huge step forward in changing the way education is taught in our colleges: she's teaching her class half on campus and half in SL! From Intellagirl:

"I teach at Ball State University in Muncie, IN where I am a PhD candidate in Rhetoric and Composition. My project was funded by the Ball State Center for Media Design. The course is a second semester core writing course (so it's a class that all students have to pass to get any degree on campus). There are 35 sections of the course being offered this semester on campus but mine is the only one with a SL component. There are 18 students in the class ranging from sophomores to seniors. The course goals are to introduce students to advanced academic writing, rhetorical concepts, and research methods."

I was able to interview her and her class last week, and it was a fun Q&A for everyone. The editing on this one is a little loose, to capture the back-and-forth of the students involved. We were cut a little short by the sudden crashing of the sim, but I saved everything we'd said up to that point. Enjoy!

Intellagirl Tully:
