Armani screws up

Not irreversably. Not irredeemably, certainly. However, their first step seems to have been a stumble. Make a mental list of the things they could get wrong in establishing a Second Life presence. It appears that Armani have managed to check-off most of the high-points there. And it's a damn shame, because people expected better. Hallmark of quality and all that, right? That tallies up to another black mark.

Iris Ophelia takes a critical look at Armani's efforts, and both that and the comments that follow are worth the read, particularly the comment from Tenshi Vielle.

Second Style's Grazia Horwitz also weighs in on the matter, among others.

If this was Wal-Mart, or Joe's Hamster Hut, or even Seven-Eleven, I don't think that there would be such a problem. This is however, Armani, and the expectations of people insofar as the brand reputation just have not been met. It's not classy, or innovative. It's basically pedestrian, and fails to meet basic cost versus quality expectations.

It's not wretched. It's not awful. It's not bad. It's merely mediocre, demonstrating a lack of imagination, a lack of flair, and a lack of willingness to make the most of the tools.

That's not the image we associate with Armani - yet, there it is, for the world to see. It doesn't appear to have been a matter of cost, so much as a shortage of excellence.

I hope Armani will reevaluate their approach and attempt to improve. Few will hold it against them if they do.

Seriously, Hollywood, WTF? The Office, Too?

Okay, remember when I was talking about how these things happen in waves? The industry's continuing to prove me right with this tidbit. Apparently, if we're to believe this Wikipedia entry, an upcoming episode of The Office will feature Dwight getting his SL on.

It's plausible, I guess. But the timing is suspect, and just adds to the believability, if you adhere to my paranoid way of thinking. But where will this wave of SL-as-entertainment fodder end? The Desperate Housewives discover Isle of Lesbos? Extreme Makeover: Tête à Pied Edition? Dr. Phil talks some sense into newbs in the Welcome Areas? Ooh, that I'd like to see ...

This Will Make You Lose Your Butt

I love our readers. The scintillatingly scintillating Iris Ophelia sends in this link to a commercial for smallstep.gov, a site devoted to helping people lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Besides being funny and cute, the creators of this spot clearly know their SL. Witness the typing animation, the row of purple buttons, and (subtle!) the fact that the unicorn does the typing, not the guy on his back. Watch it now!

The Festival of European Languages

Wednesday, September 26th will see the opening of the Festival of European Languages at Belle Isle, from 8 AM to 2 PM SLT. The Festival, meant to celebrate cultural diversity, will feature a large map of Europe that will provide landmarks to various language/cultural sites in SL, depending upon where in the map you stand.

From the press release: "In addition, speakers on language and edtech tools hold forth at Belle Isle's Harbor Theater. At the Pavilion and the Events center, one can see activities celebrating cultural uniquenesses, ethnic music, dancing, and, at 6pm GMT, a fashion show of traditional costumes and SL designer styles. At the vendor booths around the grounds, one might find language courses, edtech tools, multi-lingual translators, informational displays, and cultural tchachkes (souvenirs) to take home."

Cultures/languages represented include Greek, Finnish, Russian, Portugese, and Italian, among many others. For more information, contact Maxie Schneider or Birdie Newcomb.

A Guide to Your Virtual World

'Second Life: A Guide to Your Virtual World' is a new book by Brian A. White, and it's already available through Amazon. It's got a release party on the 15th at Menorca, twice, at 11 AM - 1 PM, and again at 7 - p PM, featuring DJ Doubledown Tandino, musician JueL Resistance, and of course the author, Ansel Gasparini. Best of all, you can pick up free, designed-just-for-this-event items by Ginny Talamasca, Dragontat Zagato, and Colleen Desmoulins, some of SL's most influential designers!

I've not read this yet, but it seems pretty thorough, and I love the design of the cover. If you're interested in anything more than this post mentions, you may contact Iris Ophelia, coordinator of the event.

(Thanks, Iris!)
