5 Companies Who Need Virtual Worlds

Over at Tech Digest, Stuart Dredge makes his case for 5 companies who ought to have virtual worlds of their own. It's an interesting list, and one could argue back and forth the benefits of any of the 5. Being a fanboy, I'll admit to being excited by the thought of a Nintendo space, and an Apple space.

In fact, the Apple thing could be its aborted 'eWorld' with a new lease on life. Nintendo could have a ton of different areas themed after any number of their more popular franchises: Mario, Metroid, Pokémon, Zelda, etc. Google is something I think everyone's curious about, and Microsoft is fearful of. The BBC has been interested in the whole virtual worlds topic for a while now, witness their various SL events. Nokia? Ehnh. Any companies we should add to this list? Send 'em in!

Wii love Second Life

I've spent a lot of time lately not buying a Nintendo Wii. Not because I don't want one, but because I stand in these really long lines and when I get to the front of them the people there tell me, "Sorry we just ran out of Wiis," and I go home and cry. However, I was able to snag a Wii Controller or WiiMote as all the ultra hip trendy people call them, which as it turns out is also hard to find, but in the absence of a Wii it really wasn't doing me much good, but it sure is pretty.

Luckily my WiiMote (Ha ha, I am ultra hip and trendy) did not go unused for long. The WiiMote is a Bluetooth device and as such can be connected to any PC with Bluetooth. Thanks to the fine people over at WiiLi.org, the WiiMote can be used much like any mouse. Thus, much like any mouse, the WiiMote can be used in Second Life. On top of that it work quite well. Actually it is only really cool in first person view, but you can map PgUp and PgDn to keys for flying; move your avatar using the D-Pad (that little plus sign shaped controller); and even look around with the pointing capability of the WiiMote.

First Reuters Newsmaker Interview - Reggie Fils-Aime

Reggie and Adam
The last fifteen minutes prior to the arrival of Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America, is littered with chatter -- talk about cellphones, interference from Blackberries, and generally all the usual teething problems that you'd expect of any voice-based interview in SL. Reggie's avatar is sitting there, logged in, but Reggie himself has not yet arrived. The audience has been chatty and calm, many of whom had been camped out for more than an hour to ensure their seat at the event.

Then the stream beeps and goes quiet, as he enters, presumably to not bore us with the necessary technical talk and social lubricant as everyone gets ready. Very quickly, at only 2 minutes past the hour (a mere four minutes after Reggie arrives) he and Adam are sitting and talking smoothly.

Adam is perceptive -- he's asking the sorts of questions people seem to be interested in hearing the answers to. Reggie is pretty smooth, answering easily and comfortable with his material. Reggie would like us not to all hack into our Wiimotes for Second Life though :)
