Crazy New CSI:NY Commercial

Oooookay. When I posted about this the last time, I was more than cautiously optimistic that maybe someone in the mainstream media would take SL seriously enough to do more than provide a backdrop of seedy sex and perversion. And this newest commercial for the upcoming episode of CSI: NY does still keep some of that feeling, but then in the latter half, turns it on its head.

Character creation has never been faster, according to this commercial. You can apparently do it all from the keyboard, too, from the sound of it. Whatever; that's all well and good. It's when they get to the gladiator arena that I begin to worry. "He's serious, Mac." Then, a shot of the SL expert character using some sort of gamepad, or input device to wage combat? Then a decapitation, Mac shouting "Log off! Now!", and the sound of my suspension of disbelief being smashed with a hammer. Well, at least it's different.

Metaplace Video Demo

For those of you having difficulty visualizing the recent Metaplace story, here's a YouTube video via Wonderland that describes it a bit more in-depth.

I just don't quite get the strange instances of Extreme Closeups™ -- Raph's hand, the lower-right corner of the screen, etc. If this was meant to hide sensitive content, why even keep that content in the video?

New Second Life Art Repository on YouTube

Resident Juria Yoshikawa created a YouTube group for all machinima that tries to capture or document art in Second Life. If you are an artist or have ever filmed pieces that deal with your favorite artwork, please consider joining the group. Much like the various Flickr art groups, this is an excellent opportunity to see what is out there, be inspired, and eventually promote your own work.

Juria also had a interesting art installation that recently closed, Blink. You can see videos of it here, it looks fascinating and surreal.

Thanks to the Second Arts blog for the tip!

Kaneva Adds YouTube Videos

I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, it's cool to see integrated technologies, and this is definitely something I'm sure LL is working on. The ability to not only watch videos in a virtual space, but being able to share the experience with your friends is valuable.

On the other hand, there's something awful about sitting at your computer watching your avatar sit at a monitor watching a video. On a practical note (and obviously I haven't experienced it yet so it might not be this way), you lose the ability to save the video, or send it to friends over the 'Net, and other normal Weblike activities. If we have any Kaneva users in the audience, would you drop a comment and let me know what it's like?

Two and a Half Virtual Men

Okay, Akela is out of hibernation and catching up with Tateru's unbelievable post run! Thanks for waiting, Internet! Although, having said that, I'll probably suddenly hit writer's block tomorrow. Regardless, this came to my attention from a bunch of separate residents, so thanks everyone!

The CBS network show 'Two and a Half Men' has developed a commercial using SL graphics. Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen look pretty good as avatars! Whether that says something positive or negative about them as humans is beyond the scope of this post. However, it's a slickly produced spot, and worth viewing, though it's notable that in the commercial Cryer says 'the virtual world', rather than 'Second Life'.

Richard and Judy Tackle SL

I'm big into the Beeb's past shows, such as Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, and The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but I'm not terribly up on their current mainstream programming. So it was with some pleased surprise that I received a link to this YouTube video, featuring not one, not two, but three SL residents in their real life selves, on the chat program Richard and Judy, which I understand to be the UK equivalent of the Today Show.

Errol Mysterio, Fizik Baskerville, and Slim Warrior all share the time, explaining to the hosts the basics of SL, and what their particular foci are in-world. It's a wonderful video, and we can all be proud of our three intrepid interviewees -- they've acquitted themselves admirably!

Best quote: "I've got Man Breasts!"

Anshe Chung's RL Husband Retracts DMCA Complaint

As posted previously, Anshe Chung had all videos of her being pelted with prim penises taken off of YouTube, citing DMCA issues. However, apparently some legal experts have spoken with them, as Guntram Graef, Anshe's RL husband, has now retracted the complaint.

"I would like to make it clear that I regret filing DMCA claims in this case, because the real issue at hand wasn't at all about copyright," Graef said. "I didn't realize that some people would misunderstand this as a censorship attempt, which it definitely was not." Interestingly, the video hasn't returned, as YouTube now says it was removed for " ... a Terms of Service violation"

Can anyone pinpoint what, in the TOS, this might violate?

Hi I'm a Second Lifer, Hi I'm a Therian

This video may not go the way you would hope for if you are reading the Second Life Insider, but it is pretty funny. Is There the Apple of the Virtual World? I'd like to see one with WoW being in the PC spot and Second Life being in the Mac spot. By the way, I found this over on Raph Koster's website.

Second Life Video.com

I was wondering how long it would take for the YouTube of SL to appear, and here it is. SecondLifeVideo.com features user-posted video of not only everyone's favorite world, but also There.com, IMVU, and other related platforms.

They also work with the Digg-like Magnify service, allowing posters to promote their and other's videos. However, with YouTube's substantial lead in presence, will SLV take off?

(Thanks, Jimmy!)

YouTube, Google, and SL: What?

O ... kay. While this isn't directly related to SL, it is unusual enough to post. On a recent the Consumerist post, someone asked whether the new YouTube/Google deal will encourage amateur video production in sweatshops across Asia. The reply from the Consumerist? Yes, " ... much in the vein of Chinese sweatshops that go around questing in WarCraft and having Second Life cybersex for their lazy American masters."

Now, clearly, this is meant as a tongue-in-cheek bit of sarcasm to the (possibly fake) question. Still, the two comparisons are completely inequal. Who would have cybersex for someone else? Got a girlfriend who just has to have it all the time? Trying to break your fraternity's record for hot av-on-av action? Still a virgin, but are too shy to even cyber on your own? This is one of the weirder things I've seen out there, but Yog Bless the Internet, I'm still glad it's there. It's given me a reason to post.

Beyond Tomorrow

Ah, I've found it: the Australian TV tech show 'Beyond Tomorrow' did a short piece on SL, and it's available on YouTube. The tone of the segment seems to bounce back and forth between 'hey, isn't this interesting', and 'hey, this is weird', but it's an upbeat look at the world, at any rate.

There's a brief interview with Kim Anubis, in which we get to see her RL self (bravo to you, Kim; most residents jealously guard their RL selves!) as she sits at her computer, talking about commerce in SL. There's also some moments of speaking one on one with Philip Linden, though the clip shown on YouTube strangely doesn't mention his name at all... perhaps it was said before the author of the clip began recording.

There's also a strange color cast to some of the video, but it's likely because of recording what's on-screen by using a video camera aimed at the television set. It's nothing too serious, and it only crops up some of the time. You can watch the video on YouTube here.
